Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to space rock and shoegazer music, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and two acclaimed records. They also endured name and lineup changes, breakups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was Urban Hymns and its single Bitter Sweet Symphony, which became a massive worldwide hit.
Soon after this commercial peak, the band quit amid creative struggles within, and Ashcroft went onto a successful solo career. Tong briefly joined Blur as a replacement for Graham Coxon. It is rumored that Simon Jones did a studio album with Ari Pap of the Floor Monks called 'Aint Nothing To It' and was never released because they both had bigger projects going on at the time. Close family and friends assure us its a fabulous indie/rock/alternate album and they really wish it would have been released.
The Verve were chosen to close the 2008 Glastonbury festival which they did with a set based on the classic 1997 album 'Urban Hymns'.

Neon Wilderness
The Verve Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
He was restless
Escape loneliness
Find a new address
Stood before I sink
In a neon wilderness
Spill my last drink
Yeah, he was restless
Escape from loneliness
I found a new address
In the last room
I hear a boom
Someone else's distress
In a neon wilderness
Someone else's distress
In a neon wilderness
And I hear a boom
In a neon wilderness
He was restless
Escape loneliness
For a new address
In a neon wilderness
He was restless
Escape loneliness
For a new address
The lyrics to The Verve's song "Neon Wilderness" explore the experience of feeling stuck in a monotonous or unfulfilling life and longing for change. The "neon wilderness" represents the overwhelming, artificial nature of modern life, where it is easy to feel lost and isolated.
The singer of the song is restless, seeking a way to escape the loneliness and repetition of his life. He describes spilling his last drink and saying goodbye to his new friends, suggesting that he has been trying to find solace in temporary distractions. But he knows that this is not enough - he needs to find a new address, a new way of living that will bring him happiness and fulfillment.
As the singer stands before a sink, he hears a boom in the last room, which he identifies as someone else's distress. The song ends on this note, leaving the listener to contemplate the interconnectedness of human experience and the struggle to find meaning in a world that can be overwhelming and confusing.
Overall, "Neon Wilderness" is a poignant representation of the emotional struggles that many people face in their quest for a fulfilling life.
