She's a Superstar
The Verve Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here she comes
Seven suns
A burning flame
She got my love
Got my head
But it's all the same
She climbed so high
I don't know why
High
On her own

She got my woe
Got my hand
Took the dreams
Right outta my head
She bought the world
I paid the bills
I took those pills
It was wind in her sails
She climbed so high
I don't know why

High,
On her own

Overall Meaning

The Verve's song She's A Superstar is an ode to a woman who seems to have it all - beauty, talent, success, and the ability to draw people towards her. The lyrics describe her as a "burning flame" that has captured the singer's heart and mind, leaving him feeling both loved and trapped. He admits that she has taken his dreams and his hand, making him a part of her own journey towards the top. Yet, despite his involvement, he is left feeling like he's just a small cog in her larger machine of success.

The song's chorus emphasizes the woman's ability to climb higher and higher, even though the singer cannot fathom how or why she is able to do so. The final line, "On her own," hints at the idea that perhaps the woman's success is not entirely due to her own talent and drive, but rather the result of privilege, manipulation, or other factors that are invisible to the outside observer.

Overall, the song captures the complex dynamics of relationships between successful, charismatic people and those who are drawn to them. It highlights the power imbalances and feelings of awe, envy, and love that can arise in such situations.

The jewel in this song is Nick McCabe's guitar play. Miraculously, it's simultaneously both otherworldly and grounding.

I saw them live every time they came to NYC from their ASIH TOUR and as much as i love Richard i can tell you when they toured with Simon Tong along with a pedal steel guitar player on stage with them as good as the show was there was ab obvious and very necessary ingredient missing: the remarkable true genius of one Nick McCabe....

Nicky was very influenced by The Edge. We all were! He redefined guitar with what could be done with effects and we all loved him for it - suddenly you didnt have to be Jimmy Page to sound like nothing on Earth. Nicky would be the first to admit it too.
