Sit And Wonder
The Verve Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I sit and wonder, I often wonder
I sit and wonder about the things she does
I sit and wonder, I often wonder
I've been waiting for this moment to come

And she's the teacher and I'm the pupil but I ain't learning anything at all
Now I' m falling into the black hole and I can barely feel the sun
Yeah I sit and wonder, I fall to pieces
I've been waiting for her to come
A bed of roses, her cheeks like peaches
Yeah I ain't going to wait no more

Give me some light, give the light, yeah give me some light, give me some light

Well writes a passage, we are mistaken, yeah
Some are going to break into stone,
The door is open and I am reaching, yeah
It looks like a prodigal son

Yeah give me some light, give the light, yeah give me some light, give me some light

God give me the light, give me the light, yeah give me some light, give me some light

I've been there doing it to my mind Lord

Something is going on inside my head Lord
Something is going on inside my head Lord

Overall Meaning

The Verve's song Sit And Wonder begins with a repeated refrain of "I sit and wonder, I often wonder," setting the tone for the introspective and contemplative lyrics that follow. The singer admits to his own confusion and uncertainty, wondering about the actions of someone close to him, possibly a romantic interest. The theme of waiting is also present, as he admits to waiting for "this moment to come" and for the person he is thinking about to arrive.

The second verse introduces a power dynamic, with the person he is thinking about being the teacher and him being the pupil, but he feels that he is not learning anything. This sense of frustration and emotional distance is conveyed through the imagery of falling into a black hole and not being able to feel the sun. The chorus repeats, with the singer falling to pieces and waiting for the person to come, but this time he declares that he will not wait anymore.

The bridge of the song introduces a new set of lyrics, with a sense of urgency and desperation as the singer asks for light. The lines "well writes a passage, we are mistaken" suggest a realization that something has gone wrong and some people will be hurt, but the door is open and someone is reaching out to him. The song ends with a repetition of the plea for light and the admission that something is happening inside his head.

Overall, the song Sit And Wonder is a reflection on the confusion and uncertainty of relationships, especially when one person seems to hold all the power. The repeated chorus creates a sense of longing and waiting, while the bridge adds a new dimension with a plea for help and a sense of impending danger.

I share the same opinion. The entire album is very underrated. The Verve were one of the last great bands.

This song is just unbeatable, unimitable, uncoverable, this is 100% original the Verve material, noise pop song with unlimited sfx, which is pretty risky, and I'm not talking about the fact they most likely compose this improvising, or the intro that has been produce in such a beautiful mess ! I will never be bored of that song !

@maxwelter758
