Good Fight Fighting
The Very Most Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why do I spend my time arguing with a lion?
If I just let it be, I will be happier.
No one's minds really change.
Dear friends become estranged.
If I just let it be, I will be happier.

But what if I see someone who lies about the poor and people fleeing war?
Then I will say something.
Though it won't change them, saying nothing will change me.

Winding up all the time.
Arguing in my mind.
If I just let it be, I will be happier.

So many clearly wrong, I could type at them all day long.
But if I just let it be, I will be happier.

But what if some dumb manchild says, women's foremost worth lies in childbirth?

Then I will say something.
Though it won't change them, saying nothing will change me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Good Fight Fighting" by The Very Most explore the internal struggle of wanting to speak up against injustices and falsehoods, but also questioning whether it's worth the emotional toll of getting into arguments that will likely not change anyone's minds. The singer compares arguing with someone to fighting a lion, acknowledging that sometimes it's better to just let things be and move on. They suggest that no one's minds really change, and that even dear friends can become estranged if they allow arguments to escalate. The repeated refrain of "If I just let it be, I will be happier" emphasizes the importance of finding peace and inner calm, even in the face of difficult situations.

However, the singer also acknowledges that there are times when silence is not an option. They mention specific scenarios, such as someone lying about the poor or belittling the value of women, where they feel compelled to speak up, even if their words may not change the other person's mind. The song seems to suggest that it's important to find a balance between standing up for what's right and protecting one's own mental health, and that this balance is not always easy to achieve.

Overall, "Good Fight Fighting" is a thoughtful and introspective exploration of the struggle to navigate difficult conversations and social issues. It acknowledges the importance of speaking out when necessary, but also recognizes the emotional toll that arguing and conflict can take on a person.

This is pure primal art, 2 men, not relying on techniques, not relying on defense. The most primal, most manly, most aggressive fight ever created. 2 men, No defense, no dodging, no blocking, just 2 men hitting each other until the other goes down. It’s horrible but it is also beautiful.

I just learned Yoshihiro Takayama suffered a spinal cord injury awhile back and is paralyzed from the neck down. Don Frye's message to him was incredible:
“Takayama-san, God gave me the greatest opponent anybody could ever ask for, you. You made the greatest fight the world has ever seen. You are the reason that our fight beat the World Cup of soccer head to head on TV. You are the image of Bushido and strength and triumph. You are the first person everyone asks about when they meet me. You are the warrior we all look to be."

@bootlegapples

That wasn't just consolation either.Sorry to hear of his paralyisis - may that warrior spirit sustain him.Props to Frye for his empathy and respect.

@walterwhite3538

Damn thats sad. Both fighters have amazing hearts and Takayama never backed down once

@BenBlackEquinoxEngelhard

Jeezus that's horrible. If there is any such man who's heart could carry him through such tragedy it's him. I wish him all the best and hope by any miracle he can overcome it.
