Someone started rumours about me in college that I sleep around and was declared a whore and social pariah within a week. My college professors informed my parents and my parents disowned me for months. It was extremely tough to win my parents back, it was extremely difficult to go to classes everyday and hearing whispers as I walk in. Infact, some of the girls who spread rumors about me also got a job at same company as me and tried to sabotage my career too. High school is particularly vicious for girls. When I talk to high school students and they share how hard life feels, I let them know it does get better. I'm proof of that. You just gotta hang tough and get out of high school without harming yourself. College/uni can be rough if you go away for it and have to live on campus in the middle of nowhere. If possible, I tell folks go to college or uni in bigger cities so they can build social circles outside of their immediate school network. That made the world of difference for me growing up.

One almost ruined me. There was a rumor that I let two guys run a train on me in high school. The guy that I swerved twice started it because I never gave him the time of day. My mom believed it because she was a wild teenager and thought it totally possible. I ran away and lived with my aunt to finish high school in an all girls school but the rumor still followed me. I had many physical fights over girls making jokes. When I graduated I left town and only come back to visit for Mardi Gras Season and I stay in hotel and never with the family that accused me of being fast. Honestly. It is so hard to get past these rumors. Even after 10 years, same rumors are circling around. My boyfriend of 2 yrs, after 8 yrs of these rumors was "warned" about me. He had an intervention set up by his friends (who used to be my batchmates in high school) and told to stop dating me cuz of so and so rumor. Like, woah! I was associated with people I never said even a "hi" to. Wow 👌 classic 👌 👏 but luckily my boyfriend looked past that intervention and told me everything. And I came to know, my guy best friend from high school going strong for years started all of them! 😅😂 i was spiraling.

High school is such a bizarre microcosm in general. Despite it being such a short time in our lives, many carry beliefs and habits with them created during that period because it's such a transformative time. The system encourages students to pick a rut based on virtually no real life experience and then stay in it. Weird.

When I was in junior high, I guess there were some rumors about me. I wasn’t very aware of them, but some friends stopped spending time with me, although they never really said why. I had a boyfriend at the time white wrote a letter to me asking if I’d sleep with him. I didn’t respond right away, but the next day he wrote me a letter saying he is breaking up and is going to date some other girl who will. Ok, I felt sorry for him. Also, how jr high is it that he’s writing letters for all this? Years pass now and I’m maybe in my late 20s, and I get a letter from him in the mail. He was writing from prison which he was serving time for getting caught selling drugs. He said how he started rumors about me and apologized for “ruining my life”. I graduated on honor roll, went to college, became a mother, and had a good job that I was able to build a career from. He was sitting in prison. Who’s life was ruined?

Girl, the rumors about me were slightly darker. Think about sacrificing children to Satan, drinking blood instead of coffee, being a psycho and other stuff, that a teacher spread around, because SHE DIDN'T LIKE MY STYLE!
