So lonely and then
You came, out of nowhere
Like the sun up from the hills
Cold, cold was the wind
Warm, warm were your lips
Out there, on that ski trail
A weekend in Canada, a change of scene
Was the most I bargained for
And then I discovered you and in your eyes
I found the love that I couldn't ignore
Down, down came the sun
Fast, fast, fast, beat my heart
I knew when the sun set
From that day, we'd never ever part
The lyrics to The Vibrations' song "Canadian Sunset" chronicles the story of a person experiencing loneliness and the sudden emergence of a new love. The first lines "Once I was alone, so lonely and then, You came, out of nowhere, Like the sun up from the hills" symbolize the dark, empty space the subject of the song was in until they encountered a new love interest. The second verse describes how the person met the love of their life during a ski trip. The third and fourth lines, "Cold, cold was the wind, Warm, warm were your lips," uses temperature to differentiate the dreariness of the weather with the pleasure of a kiss from a newfound love.
The chorus of the song sings about the person's trip to Canada, which they originally intended to be just a simple change of environment. But during their journey, they found someone they fell in love with. The chorus also speaks about how the sun goes down but the memory of that meeting with their love interest stays with them forever. It concludes with the line, "From that day, we'd never ever part," expressing the belief that the two newfound lovers will always stay together.
"Canadian Sunset" was written in 1956 by Eddie Heywood and Norman Gimbel. It was first recorded by Heywood himself and the song became a hit in 1956, reaching number seven on the US charts. The following year, The Ventures released an instrumental version that became a popular hit as well. The Vibrations also recorded the song in 1962, and their version appears on their album of the same year, "The Vibrations Sing the Teenagers' Golden Hits."
