Away
The View Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can fall away
I'm a teenage answer to nothing
When you always change the way you talk
In this time away I have never felt more wanted
But it always comes with bad returns
And I've never felt this rhythm
When I only wanted more than you
Until I fall
And I feel you
And it's everything I need
When this world is falling down
And I know you
When everything i see
In this world is falling down again
And you're all the same
You just turn me over and over
But you'll never get the best of me
In this time away I have never felt more wanted
But it always comes with bad returns
And you're all the same
You just fade away
Until there's nothing left
Everything you wanted back again

When all I say is stay the same
Until i return, you know you're wrong

Overall Meaning

The View's "Away" is a song about feeling lost, disconnected and unwanted. The opening line "I can fall away" sets the tone, suggesting that the singer is vulnerable and could easily slip from view. The next line, "I'm a teenage answer to nothing" adds to this feeling of being adrift and without direction or purpose. It conveys a sense of frustration with the world and a lack of confidence in the singer's ability to navigate it.

The next lines "When you always change the way you talk" suggests that the singer is trying to fit in and be accepted, but that the effort is futile. The singer is constantly having to change themselves to please others, but is still not accepted. The chorus offers some relief, with the singer finding solace in the love of another person. "And I feel you, and it's everything I need" shows that the singer has found something real and genuine in someone else, which is a source of comfort.

However, the song is not without its doubt and uncertainty. The lines "And you're all the same, you just turn me over and over" suggest that the singer is not entirely convinced of the other person's authenticity or commitment. They feel like they are just being toyed with and that the other person is not really interested in them. This conflict between feeling loved and feeling unsure creates a sense of tension that runs throughout the song.

Overall, "Away" is a poignant and relatable song that speaks to the universal experience of feeling lost and disconnected. It captures the uncertainty and vulnerability of adolescence and the struggle to find one's place in the world.

Whoopi just lost every credit I have ever given her, and revealed the true nature of who she is as a person. Raising a child is hard, but punishing a child with emotional loss and negatively impacting her daughters attachment style by giving away the family dog- that is a whole new level of low under any circumstance.

It’s time for your ignorant behind to go, Whoopi.

People, especially POC, that use your voice as a rare representation of their community in mainstream media look to you as a role model, and you just told millions of inexperienced young moms they can emotionally extort their children. Emotional pain is never an appropriate behavioral reinforcer. Maybe the child has reasons for her grades. Maybe she is being bullied, and that relationship with her dog may be the closest thing to a friend she has right now.

There is no justification or defense for this parenting choice, or for Whoopi to defend it. I have stood behind Whoopi during years of questionable statements and views, but this one is the last.

I always find it entertaining when Whoopi schools viewers and the panel about parenting best practices as if she's Mother Theresa. lol

She is a nun, get it right

It’s horrible. It wouldn’t even cross my mind to take away the dog. Seems like the mother was looking for an excuse to get rid of the dog.

Maybe. Or maybe she was at her wits end.

Desyree Malig

my thoughts exactly. couldn't she just ground her for 2 months? why give away the family pet as punishment? 😡

I thought the same thing, that woman doesn't deserve the pleasure of owning a dog to begin with
