Grace
The View Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You, without saying anything,
Let it be known
That I, without doing anything,
Had thrown it all away
Down the laundry chute,
All the cute little words and melodies
Won't save me now
Now that we've gone this far

We've said goodbye
Said goodbye
Goodbye to grace

I, was waiting for a witness
And you, were waiting
For the door to open up
To set you free from this mess
You turned your back
Said "you don't know
Anything about love"

You said goodbye
Said goodbye
Said goodbye to grace

We, washed ourselves
Clean of all feeling
We were feeling good,
Until we both got scare
Of ourselves and of each-other
We bailed out
We don't live here anymore

We said goodbye

Said goodbye
Said goodbye to grace

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The View's song Grace paint a picture of a failed relationship where both parties lost the essence of what made their love beautiful. The first verse showcases a situation where one person decides to throw away everything that made their love worth fighting for, while the other person watches in silence. The use of the metaphor "down the laundry chute" could signify a desire to discard the things that were once cherished, as if they have now become soiled and unusable. The second verse has an air of nostalgia as the theme of waiting for a witness comes into play. Both parties seem to be in a waiting game where they are waiting for the other person to make a move.

The climax of the song comes when the first person turns their back and dismisses the second person's knowledge of love. The tone conveys the idea that there is no hope left for reconciliation, as both parties have become washed out and numb to the emotions they once shared. The chorus repeats the words "we said goodbye, said goodbye, goodbye to grace," implying that the couple let go of the grace they once had, a grace that could have united them if they had worked to preserve it. In summary, the lyrics convey the regret of both parties in letting their love fade away without putting in the necessary effort to fix it.

Love it, as an Aussie we always cop shit about our accent and I always hear bands from Scotland, England, Ireland etc who sing completely different to how they talk. Good on ya boys for staying true to who you are, great song and though I don't understand all the words, I am sure I will pick them up with a few more listens to you blokes! Great job, well done!!!

Cant actually find the words to describe how much i love this band. The song is amazing and if its not in the charts then there's seriously something wrong.
