The Don
The View Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't wanna fall asleep
I don't wanna wake up on my own
I don't wanna fall asleep
Lately, I've been tryin' to figure out
If I'm crazy, for wanting a reason to consume your poison
I've been feeling out of place
Miles apart but feet away
Strike me like a match stick
Weave me in your fabric, anything to get me through the day
I don't wanna fall asleep
I don't wanna wake up on my own
Swimming in an empty sheet
And it's drowning me
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause the ghost of you is all I've known
I don't wanna
I don't wanna fall asleep 'til you're next to me
Lately, thinking that I'd rather be
On the 15
To your one room apartment with 70's carpets
Missing what I've never met
Going all in on my bets
Letters and a cassette get it off of my chest
Anything to know you feel the same
I don't wanna fall asleep
I don't wanna wake up on my own
Swimming in an empty sheet
And it's drowning me
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause the ghost of you is all I've known
I don't wanna
I don't wanna fall asleep 'til you're next to me
I've been freaking out
Got me drunk on how
Every text you've ever sent, I've over read
Cause I've seen these same four white walls
Stuck in downtown Montréal
So just stay
So I don't have to stay awake
I don't wanna fall asleep
I don't wanna wake up on my own
Swimming in an empty sheet
And it's drowning me
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause the ghost of you is all I've known
I don't wanna
I don't wanna fall asleep 'til you're next to me
I don't wanna fall asleep
'Cause the ghost of you is all I've known
I don't wanna
I don't wanna fall asleep 'til you're next to me

Overall Meaning

The View's song "The Don" is a ballad about longing for someone who is not there. The lyrics express a deep desire to be with the person they love, rather than fall asleep alone or drown in an empty sheet. The singer describes himself as feeling out of place, miles apart but feet away, and he longs for the person he loves to stay with him so he can fall asleep and not be alone.

The lyrics talk about how one may be seen as crazy for wanting to consume the poison of the person they love. It captures the feeling of being so consumed by someone that even their poison seems desirable. The desire to be with that person seems to push the singer to want to take bigger risks like going all in on their bets or writing letters and making cassette tapes to get things off of their chest.

The chorus repeats the sentiment of not wanting to fall asleep or be alone, and how the ghost of the loved one is all they know. The final verse talks about getting drunk on every text sent and how saying awake is only possible when that person is around. The song is a beautiful expression of the longing and all-consuming love that most people experience at least once in their lives.

Thinking of poems of poverty
Sitting with a tight clenched wrist, thinking how to gain authority
Oh what a soft touch of a boy
He'd wander with pride to sell and keep visions to his self
Visions to his self

We'd talk of treasure, and over-rated games
We'd steal the milk bottles, sneaking through the back round Jimmy's way.
What we loved most of all, was sitting round the shop, while this young boy was sitting all alone,
Sitting all alone

Pondering times of sanctuary
He was taking his piano lessons, we were on half an E
Invested life in medicine, which isn't the wisest way to go, had so much shit going on.
Convinced he'd never win. Convinced he was a sin.

We'd speak of women and cheaper carryouts
We'd turn up to all the festivals, trying to bring down the touts,
What we love the most of all was sittin' round the shop, while this poor boy was sittin' all alone,
Sittin' all a

We'd talk of treasure and overrated games
We'd steal the milk bottles, sneaking through the back round Jimmy's way.
What we loved most of all, was hanging round the shop, while this young boy was sitting all alone

He didn't find none of his own kind, he didn't have none of his own kind
You should take interest in his mind, not spend all of his time wastin all his money and his time

Thinking of poems of poverty
Sitting with a tight clenched wrist, thinking how to gain authority
Oh what a soft touch of a don
He'd wander with pride to sell and keep visions to his self
Visions to his self

We'd talk of treasure, and over-rated games
Steal the milk bottles, sneaking through the back round Jimmy's way.
What we loved most of all, was hanging round the shop, while this young boy was sitting all alone,
Sitting all a

Steal the milk bottles, sneaking through the back round Jimmy's way.

What we loved most of all was hanging round the shop
What we loved most of all was waiting round the shop

What we loved most of all was hanging round the shop where this young boy was sitting all alone
