They appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in October 2002 (the first Australian band to do so since Men at Work in 1983) with the words "Rock is Back: meet the Vines" boldly emblazoned underneath. Referred to as the 'The' bands, The Strokes, The Hives, The White Stripes and The Vines combined "old fashioned punk and adrenaline fuelled riffs" to be ushered in at the beginning of 2002 as the "saviors of rock".
The Vines have been moderately successful in the Australian recording industry, winning an ARIA in 2002 for Breakthrough Artist and receiving nominations for six other awards in as many years. In 2003, their debut album Highly Evolved went double platinum in their home country of Australia, and since then the band has released six albums and a "Best-Of" compilation from their time at Capitol Records.
The band started to record their 5th album in February 2010. The album recording was completely finished in mid March, with mixing taking place in Sydney at the end of March and mastering taking place in early April. The album, "Future Primitve," was released in June 2011.

With the commandments at your feet
Where the devil lays his hand
You don't even need to think
I'm tearing holes without a sink
But I know just where I stand
I don't know what to choose
Under the oak tree tin all around me
I don't know what to prove
Yeah she felt what you felt like hell
In the jungle you're in the jungle
You're in the jungle that's you
In the jungle you're in the jungle
You're in the jungle oh
And I'll be waiting for a hit yeah
Ain't gonna seem fair tonight
And I'll keep havin' other fits
Because it makes me feel alright
Alright alright yeah oh right
Right oh yeah
So if you should need a hand
Write down the address of the land
But I'm running out of time
I'll tell you when it's time to leave
You're never gonna get clean
The lyrics to The Vines's song In the Jungle are reflective of the complexity and uncertainty of life. The opening lines, "In the jungle you can sleep, with the commandments at your feet, where the devil lays his hand," juxtapose the idea of a peaceful sleep with symbols of fear and chaos. The idea of having the commandments at your feet suggests that there is a sense of stability and guidance, yet the devil's hand portrays a more ominous, destructive force.
The singer then goes on to express the difficulty of decision-making in life, with lines such as "Lines from the story you put before me, I don't know what to choose. Under the oak tree tin all around me, I don't know what to prove." This may suggest that life can feel like a confusing narrative, with too many options and too much pressure to prove oneself.
The chorus, "In the jungle you're in the jungle, you're in the jungle that's you," emphasizes the idea that one is always part of the chaotic, unpredictable jungle of life. The final lines, "So if you should need a hand, write down the address of the land, but I'm running out of time. I'll tell you when it's time to leave, you're never gonna get clean," suggest that even with guidance, there is a sense of desperation and urgency that comes with living in the jungle.
