They appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in October 2002 (the first Australian band to do so since Men at Work in 1983) with the words "Rock is Back: meet the Vines" boldly emblazoned underneath. Referred to as the 'The' bands, The Strokes, The Hives, The White Stripes and The Vines combined "old fashioned punk and adrenaline fuelled riffs" to be ushered in at the beginning of 2002 as the "saviors of rock".
The Vines have been moderately successful in the Australian recording industry, winning an ARIA in 2002 for Breakthrough Artist and receiving nominations for six other awards in as many years. In 2003, their debut album Highly Evolved went double platinum in their home country of Australia, and since then the band has released six albums and a "Best-Of" compilation from their time at Capitol Records.
The band started to record their 5th album in February 2010. The album recording was completely finished in mid March, with mixing taking place in Sydney at the end of March and mastering taking place in early April. The album, "Future Primitve," was released in June 2011.

The Vines Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
'Cause my Lords a stranger
Beatles are bigger than Jesus
'Till the end of time
We will be alive
We know more now
Than we did then
Well only be awhile
Makin' the future right
Strung out and here today
We'll take your life away
Well only be awhile
Makin' the future right
Strung out and here today
We'll take your life away
Hey!
Burnin' down the manger
The song "Manger" by The Vines is a fast-paced, high-energy track that seems to be full of rage and rebellion. The opening lines "Burnin' down the manger, 'cause my Lord's a stranger" immediately suggest an anger towards traditional religious beliefs and institutions. The statement "Beatles are bigger than Jesus" further adds fuel to this idea, drawing parallels to John Lennon's controversial statement in 1966 that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus.
The chorus of the song, "We know more now than we did then" seems to speak to a feeling of superiority, as if the younger generation has figured something out that their elders hadn't. It almost feels like a call to arms, as if the band is urging listeners to join them in rejecting old ideas and creating something new. The repeated lines "We'll take your life away" reinforce this idea and suggest a certain level of aggression that is matched by the explosive guitar riffs and pounding drums.
Overall, "Manger" is a powerful song that captures a certain sense of disillusionment and anger that many young people feel towards established institutions and ideas. It is a reflection of the rebellious spirit of rock and roll and a reminder that music can be a powerful tool for pushing back against the status quo.
