The Virgins were formed after a Ryan McGinley photo shoot brought together Donald Cumming and Wade Oates to work on tracks Cumming had begun. The two other members joined shortly after; Erik Ratensperger, and Nick Ackerman. The Virgins have gained popularity recently due to the CW show Gossip Girl featuring five of their songs in one episode and recent participation in SXSW. Erik Ratensperger left the band at the end of 2008 and has since been replaced with Kevin [last name unknown as of yet].

Prima materia
The Virgins Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Long hours, watching faces in the rain.
Four aspirin, two alka-seltzer and a beer.
I'm laughing, but there ain't nobody here.
Don't worry, it ain't about me 'cause
I don't let misfortune bend me all outta shape,
Even though it hurts I gotta hear it again,
Sayin' “Oh don't touch the radio, don't touch radio,
Oh, don't touch that radio, not while I'm playing it.”
Smashed vases, water dripping down the wall.
Lost causes, walking through a crystal ball.
Six numbers, one that brings me back to you.
I'm laughing, what else am I supposed to do?
Don't worry, it ain't about me 'cause
I don't let misfortune bend me all outta shape,
I still get emotional when the music is on.
Even though it hurts I gotta hear it again,
Sayin' “Oh don't touch the radio, don't touch radio,
Oh,don't touch that radio, not while I'm playing it.”
Night's coming, oh there’s no sun in the sky.
I’m running low, cold shower again.
All Summer, old cars rumblin' by,
I'm lovin' her so, still stuck in the film.
Don't worry, it ain't about me.
I'm standing where I need to be.
I don't let misfortune bend me all outta shape,
I still get emotional when the music is on.
Even though it hurts I gotta hear it again,
Sayin' “Oh don't touch the radio, don't touch radio,
Oh, don't touch that radio, not while I'm playing it.”
The lyrics to The Virgins' song "Prima materia" showcase a sense of detachment from reality and an intense emotional connection to music. The singer seems to be experiencing different episodes of life, such as torn flowers and long hours of watching faces in the rain. Despite this, they remain unfazed by misfortune and refuses to let it bend them out of shape. The singer takes comfort in the fact that even though the music hurts, they still want to keep listening to it. The phrase "Oh, don't touch the radio" emphasizes this as they are pleading with someone not to change the channel while the music is playing.
The second verse starts with the image of smashed vases and lost causes, perhaps signifying broken dreams and missed opportunities. The singer is stuck in the past and misses someone, as symbolized by the six numbers that bring them back to that person. However, even though they are feeling so much pain and uncertainty, they can only laugh, unsure of what else to do. The imagery throughout the song is unsettling, especially the reference to walking through a crystal ball, emphasizing the sense of disorientation.
As the song nears its end, the singer mentions the night coming, and there being no sun in the sky, again emphasizing the sense of detachment from the world. Even in moments where they should be happy, i.e., summer, the feeling is fleeting, and they are stuck in the film, unable to break free from the past. In the end, the singer states that they are standing where they need to be, a final moment of acceptance.
