The Virgins were formed after a Ryan McGinley photo shoot brought together Donald Cumming and Wade Oates to work on tracks Cumming had begun. The two other members joined shortly after; Erik Ratensperger, and Nick Ackerman. The Virgins have gained popularity recently due to the CW show Gossip Girl featuring five of their songs in one episode and recent participation in SXSW. Erik Ratensperger left the band at the end of 2008 and has since been replaced with Kevin [last name unknown as of yet].

Rich Girls
The Virgins Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Pretending we're all grown up
Hey, rich girls!
Well, can you tell me why
You're so stuck up
And act like you're so down?
I'll tell you everything I know
I'll tell you everything I know
Any little thing I know
What a lovely way with words
Is that the way I see the world
It's just the way I see the world
You got to know!
You got to know!
We'll walk around
Pretending we're all grown up
Hey, rich girls!
Well can you tell me why
You're so stuck up
And act like you're so down?
I'll tell you everything I know
Any little thing I know
I'll tell you everything I know
Any little thing I know
What a lovely way with words
Is that the way I see the world
It's just the way I see the world
You got to know!
You got to know!
I went down to your house last weekend and
You was like "Come on man
You don't have to point out everything that's bad
So there's a broken mirror on my bed
I'll clean it up, so what?
You don't have to be such an asshole all the time, haha
Don't be like that, she said
The Virgins’ “Rich Girls” is a commentary on the empty and entitled nature of young wealthy girls. The song opens with the singer observing the way these girls carry themselves, walking around and pretending to be grown up. He addresses them directly, asking why they are so stuck up and act like they are down. This is likely a reference to the way these privileged young women appropriate certain aspects of lower class culture, like fashion and slang. The singer then offers to share what he knows with the rich girls, possibly a sarcastic comment on the idea that they would have anything to learn from him.
The chorus repeats the opening lines, suggesting that the rich girls are trapped in their own narrow world and unable to escape their entitled attitudes. The singer then reflects on his own outlook, calling it a “lovely way with words,” perhaps referencing his ability to see through the superficiality of these girls and their lives. He urges the listener to understand this perspective, imploring them to “know!”
The final verse features a conversation between the singer and one of the rich girls, highlighting the disconnect between their respective lifestyles. She invites him to her house but when he points out something broken, she laughs it off and tells him not to be such an asshole. This moment reinforces the idea that these young women are not really in touch with the realities of life outside their privileged bubble.
