Wheel Of Fortune
The Virgins Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oh, when the Fall wind blows I'm gonna leave this town
I had an old man doctor with a strong right hand
Oh when he closed that shutter he left the locks open
Now, no matter where I go, I'm always being told
Baby, come home and take my hand in the night
When the tide is rising
And the moon is bright
We can turn that wheel of fortune around
We can turn that wheel of fortune around
Had a job out west playing background scene
Oh, when I cash my check I'll crash this love machine
I met a game show quiz man and his boyfriend too
Oh, but his cards said nothing, well, I'lll look for you
Now, I've got to feel again your hot feet on my skin
Baby, come home and take my hand in the night
What do you got to keep you hanging round?
When the tide is rising
And the stars are bright
We can turn that wheel of fortune around
We can turn that wheel of fortune around
At night when I'm trying to sleep
I see your trail of waste blowing in slow motion
I try but I can't touch your face
I hold it next to me and I wake up, no
And I know one day you'll walk my way just smiling as you say
Baby, come home and take my hand in the night
What do you got to keep you hanging round?
When the tide is rising
And the moon is bright
We can turn that wheel of fortune around
We can turn that wheel of fortune around
The song "Wheel of Fortune" by The Virgins talks about a person who feels lost and is looking for meaning and purpose in life. The first verse portrays the person's current situation, with no clean clothes and their window down, waiting for the Fall wind to take them away from their current town. The reference to the "old man doctor" could be symbolic of a figure who was meant to heal them but instead left them vulnerable as the locks were left open. The person seems to be searching for something, and in the chorus, they mention someone telling them to come home and take their hand. The chorus suggests that the person's current circumstances are not enough, and they need something to keep them hanging around. The line "we can turn that wheel of fortune around" implies that there is hope and that things can get better no matter how lost they feel.
The second verse talks about the person's job out west, playing the background scene, signifying that they feel like they are just going through the motions of life. The meeting with the game show quiz man could be symbolic of how they feel like they are constantly being judged by society without any real answers. However, they promise to keep searching until they find what they are looking for. The bridge of the song is especially poignant, with the person dreaming of someone they miss, but they cannot touch their face.
Overall, "Wheel of Fortune" is a song about seeking a better life and a deeper purpose, with the hopeful message that no matter how lost you may feel, it is always possible to turn your life around.
