Turn Around Look At Me
The Vogues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is someone walking behind you
Turn around, look at me
There is someone watching your footsteps
Turn around, look at me

There is someone who really needs you
Here's my heart in my hand
Turn around, look at me

And understand this
That there is someone who'll stand beside you
Turn around baby and look at me
And there's someone who'll love and guide you
Turn around, look, look at me
Oh I've waited, but I'll wait forever
I'm gonna wait for you to come to me
Look at someone look at someone who really loves you
Turn around, look at me

Ooh there's someone who'll stand beside you
Turn around baby and look at me
And there's someone yo love and guide you
Turn around babe, turn around and look at me

I've waited, but I'll wait forever
I'm gonna wait until you to come back to me
Look at someone who really loves you
Turn around and look at me

Turn around, look at me
Look over your shoulder babe

Overall Meaning

The Vogues' song Turn Around Look at Me is a heart-wrenching plea to a lost love. The opening lines, "There is someone walking behind you, Turn around, look at me" introduce the song's central theme of regret. There is someone longing for their love, watching their every move and wishing they would just turn around and notice them. The next line intensifies this feeling of longing by emphasizing that someone needs the addressee. The phrase "Here's my heart in my hand" indicates a vulnerability that comes with opening up to someone.

The chorus brings out the emotion of the song. The repetition of "Turn around, look at me" is haunting, emphasizing the urgency and longing of the person behind the addressee. The phrase "there is someone who'll stand beside you" speaks of loyalty and support, while "there's someone who'll love and guide you" implies that the addressee, even though they are not acknowledging their love, still needs guidance and love.

The final verse conveys a deep sense of waiting: "Oh, I've waited, but I'll wait forever. I'm gonna wait for you to come to me." The use of "forever" underlines the depth of emotions the person feels. The song ends with the addressee being told to look over their shoulder once more, while the person behind them and singing the song holds out hope that the addressee will "turn around and look at me."

I imagine my wife singing this to me from heaven (she passed 9 years ago) and saying she will wait forever for me to join her. Brings tears every time I listen to it.

My mother passed away just two days ago. I remember how she loved this song. I wish she'd turn around and see me again, I want her to tell me she loves me, and that I adore her. This song enters my mind and I break down crying and screaming. Mom, I love you so much and I always will. Thank you for everything. You were and are an angel. I love you.

Im so sorry you lost you mom. Its painful I know. My mom died in 2014. Your mom is still with you ya know. You may not see her but she's there & she's the reason you heard this song just 2 days after she died telling you to "turn around, look at me". Praying for God to comfort you & all who loved her.

@SLSRVA

Losing your mother is something you never totally get over. It does become more manageable with time. I assure you your mom doesn't want you to be unhappy.
