The Wagoneers' debut album, Stout and High, was released by Herb Alpert's A&M Records in 1988; a follow-up album, Good Fortune, was released in 1989. Although the band appeared on Austin City Limits and Nashville Now, their popularity never took off and they band broke up in 1990.
"There were a lot of reasons why the Wags didn't happen on a bigger scale," said Monte Warden in a 1995 interview, when he was pursuing a solo career. "Number one, we were on a pop label (A&M) that had never attempted to get in the country market before. Two, even though it was just four or five years ago, that was light years in regards to country's popularity and we were a different group, a bit unique at that time. That, and maybe country radio wasn't just ready for those songs. It doesn't matter what the success level was, for me; I was just pleased to get to make records."
The Wagoneers still have their fans; a MySpace page dedicated to the band contains audio clips from their two albums and the CMT blog dubbed them "best rockabilly band that ever was”

The Wagoneers' "Sit A Little Closer" is a passionate love ballad which expresses the desire the singer has for his love interest to sit closer to him. The chorus repeats twice, with the same plea for her to sit closer, as the singer expresses his blindness when it comes to love. He is unable to see anything beyond his love for her. He asks her to tell him what she is thinking so that he is sure that she feels the way he does. The singer is so consumed with love that the passion and desire make him tremble and shake.
The lyrics bring to light the vulnerability that comes with falling in love. The singer is so consumed with his love that he is willing to lay everything bare, his words and actions, for the one who has captured his heart. If you think twice just realise how many doors this guys open for the new country music of the 90's .It´s a shame that they never got the success that they deserve,a perfect bridge between country music and cowpunk.

A few years back they played pretty regularly at The Continental Club in Austin every Sunday night. In 2015 my wife and brother-in-law drove from L.A. to catch 1 1/2 hours set of theirs in Austin! So totally worth it!!! The night before Monte was at The Alamo for a 185 year anniversary of the battle for the Alamo. Asked by the descendants of the Alamo to sing "Stout and High"! Wow! What an honor. i could almost cry just thinking about it.
