All I Could Do Was Cry
The Wailers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard church bells ringing,
I heard a choir singing.
I saw my love walk down the aisle.
On her finger, he placed a ring, oh, oh.

I saw them holding hands
She was standing there with my man.
I heard them promise 'til death do us part.
Each word was a pain in my heart.

Oh. All I could do, all I could do was cry.
All I could do was cry.
I was losing the man that I loved,
and all I could do was cry.

And now the wedding is over,
rice has been thrown over their heads.
For them, life has just begun but mine is at an end

Oh. All I could do, all I could do was cry.
All I could do was cry.

I was losing the man that I loved,
And all I could do was cry.

Overall Meaning

"All I Could Do Was Cry" by The Wailers is a heartbreaking ballad about a woman who is attending her former lover's wedding. The song captures the melancholy feeling of heartbreak and the pain of watching someone you love marry someone else. Throughout the song, the singer describes the experience of hearing wedding bells, watching the couple exchange vows, and feeling the weight of each promise. She is overcome with emotions as she witnesses the man she loves marry another woman.

The opening verse of the song sets the scene for the rest of the lyrics. The singer hears the church bells ringing, hears a choir singing, and sees her lover walking down the aisle with another woman. She watches as he places a ring on her finger, effectively ending any hope she may have had of reconciliation. The second verse adds to the melancholy feeling of the song as she sees the couple holding hands and hears them repeat promises to each other.

The chorus of the song repeats the sentiment that the singer, in that moment, can only cry. She feels powerless and heartbroken, knowing that the man she loves is gone forever. The final verse describes the end of the wedding ceremony and the beginning of a new chapter for the newly married couple. But for the singer, this moment marks the end of everything she had hoped for with the man she lost.

Overall, "All I Could Do Was Cry" is a powerful song about heartbreak and loss. It effectively captures the feelings of someone who is watching their former lover move on with someone else. The song serves as a reminder of just how painful love can be.

I listen to this recording often and marvel at Gail's amazing talent. Out of curiosity I put a photo of my wife from the same time period next to Gail's album cover photo, they look like identical twins and have exactly the same hair style. We grew up in Tacoma Washington and were lucky enough to attend numerous Wailers dances all over the area. I am 78 years old now and they are still my favorite because they just put a smile on my face every time. Now I enjoy playing these you tube videos

Rest In Peace Gail ...it has been a little more than a year since she passed. I am nearing 78 myself and grew up just outside of Puyallup (Summit Area) I had a hot rod Ford and made it to a great many Wailers Dances ...I had the chance of meeting her up on Canyon road one afternoon when i was 16 (gave her horse some water) and instantly fell in love! lol She was a great singer and I still have the original Spanish Castle LP which is good and wore out but also have a digital version. Those were great times back then.

@@radtek2 Thanks for that update. I searched for current status but did not find anything. Those were the days. I think we lived at the best time in history.

I must have been about 5 and allowed to sit in on a practice in Tacoma with sisters as our neighbors were friends..have been wowed ever since..also backstage at The Castle

@billdowning1047

She was 15 when this was recorded but she'd been singing with Tacoma area C&W bands since she was 13. I'll play 'I Idolize you' and people are astounded when I tell them A) her age and that B) she's a white chick. On the flip side, the singer/ drummer for the DYNAMICS was Jimmy Hanna, a black kid in an all white group.

Jimmy Hanna is white....
