The trio of Scott Walker (Noel Scott Engel), Gary Walker (Gary Leeds, formerly of The Standells), and John Walker (John Maus, November 12, 1943 - May 7, 2011) moved from the U.S. to Britain in 1965. Like The Ramones, they were not related, and adopted the same last name as a show business touch. They had only minor success in the U.S., but topped the UK singles charts with Make It Easy On Yourself in 1965 and The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore) in 1966.
After a UK tour in late 1967, which also featured Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens, and Engelbert Humperdinck, followed by a tour of Japan in 1968, the group officially disbanded. After the group disbanded, all three members scored U.S. and UK chart hits, under their Walker names.
Reforming in 1974, The Walker Brothers recorded a version of Tom Rush's No Regrets which soared into the British Top Ten after an absence of over a decade. However, the three albums that followed sold poorly: No Regrets (1975), Lines (1976), and Nite Flights (1978). Scott Walker's tracks on the final album, Nite Flights, laid the stylistic groundwork for his later solo career.
John Walker died at his Los Angeles home on May 7, 2011
We're All Alone
The Walker Brothers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And it may never end
So cry no more
On the shore of dreams
Will take us out to sea
Forever more, forever more
Close your eyes and dream
'Neath the waves
Through the caves of hours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone
We're all alone
Close the window
Come alive
Honey, we'll be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out
Let it all begin
Learn how to pretend
Once the story's told
You can't help but grow old
Roses do
Lovers too
So cast your seasons to the winds
And hold me dear
Oh, hold me dear
Close the window
Come alive
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out
Let it all begin
All's forgotten now
We're all alone
We're all alone
Close the window
Come alive
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out
Let it all begin
Throw it to the winds, my love
Hold me dear
The Walker Brothers' song "We're All Alone" is a heartfelt and bittersweet ballad about romantic solitude. The lyrics invoke a melancholy mood through the image of rain, which represents sadness and endless sorrow. The rain is paired with the metaphor of the dream shore, which offers a glimmer of hope by taking the singer "out to sea/ Forever more, forever more." This line serves as a reminder that though the dream of love may become isolated, it can also be eternal.
Throughout the track, the lyrics suggest that romantic love can be a refuge from the storms of life. The singer invites their lover to "close [their] eyes and dream" of being together, and through their imagination, they can create a world where they are "all alone" but nonetheless happy. The song notes that love is a fleeting thing, "Once the story's told/ You can't help but grow old," and the last words of the song - "Hold me dear" - suggest that the main character is looking for security and comfort in a world where nothing is constant.

Out of the guys in The Walker Brothers only Gary is left because John lost his battle against liver cancer (deceased in 2011 aged 67) and Scott lost his battle against cancer (deceased in 2019 aged 76).
