Three Marlenas
The Wallflowers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alone tonight in somebody's bed
She gone and dyed her hair red
She only went and did what she did
'Cause he would drive her home then
There's lipstick on her new dress
She hadn't even paid yet
But it doesn't matter where the money went
It wasn't how she paid her rent

One, two, three Marlenas
There's got to be someone we can trust
Out here among us

Now lookin' out across the city lights
She thought they'd be a good pair
Now he could make a living sellin' cars
Maybe she could work there
She's gonna pick a star in the night
And pray to make it all right
She tried so hard not to pick a kite
She always prayed to heaven lights

One, two, three Marlenas
There's got to be someone we can trust
Out here among us
One, two, three Marlenas
It's see no, speak no, hear no evil about us
The three Marlenas

Man, I think I'm gonna buy myself a Rolls
Maybe a Chevrolet
One where I can pull that top down
Just let my radio play
Now I'm headin' out on that highway
I'm goin' right out of state
Now I ain't lookin' back until I'm gone
Right through heaven's gates

One, two, three Marlenas
There's got to be someone we can trust
Out here among us
One, two, three Marlenas
Ya see no, speak no, hear no evil among us
The three Marlenas
Three Marlenas

Overall Meaning

The Wallflowers's song "Three Marlenas" is a poignant ballad that tells the story of three women named Marlena. The song begins by describing a woman who has dyed her hair red and is lying alone in somebody's bed. She did what she did because the person would drive her home. Although there is lipstick on her new dress and she hadn't even paid yet, it is not important because it wasn't how she paid her rent.

The song then moves on to talk about the other two Marlenas. One of the Marlenas is looking out across the city lights, thinking that they could be a good pair, and wondering if he could make a living selling cars and maybe she could work there. She's gonna pick a star in the night and pray to make it all right but never wants to think of picking a kite as she always prayed to heaven lights. The final Marlena is singing about wanting to buy herself either a Rolls or a Chevrolet, one where she can pull the top down and just let her radio play, as she heads out on the highway and right out of state.

The song's lyrics send a strong message about the difficulties and struggles that women face in their daily lives. It tells the story of how women are often left alone to fend for themselves and how they struggle to make ends meet. Throughout the song, the three Marlenas are united in their common search for something better, something that will help them escape their current situations, and one can only surmise that this is their shared dream.

Is it just me or does the 90s era seem to always remind you of summer, Whether it was grunge, pop, or rock. Interesting yet amazing!

I think it's because of the memories of listening to these bands throughout the day more. I remember when U2's beautiful day would play on my moms stereo came on and it was really beautiful outside, sun shining, partly cloudy, 80 degrees and not a worry in my head. just me being a kid and cloud gazing while thinking on what I wanted to do next.
