Pain
The War on Drugs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Go to bed now I can tell
Pain is on the way out now
Look at the way the domino falls away

I know it's hard looking in
Knowing that tomorrow you'll be back again
Hang your head and let me in, I'm waiting
So long

I was staring into the light
When I saw you in the distance, I knew that you'd be mine
Am I moving back in time?
Just standing still?

I met a man with a broken back
He had a fear in his eyes that I could understand
I can't even shake the hand
Without breaking it

I've been pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change
And I wanna find what can't be found

I'm aware of the time we lost
Like a demon in the doorway, waiting to be born
But I'm here all alone, just begging

Pull me close and let me hold you in
Give me the deeper understanding of who I am
Yeah, I'm moving back again, I'm waiting, yeah

I'm just pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound

I resist what I cannot change, own it in your own way
Yeah, I wanna find what can't be found

Overall Meaning

The song "Pain" by The War on Drugs is a reflection on the struggle to overcome internal pain and find meaning and purpose in life. The lyrics suggest that the singer has experienced pain and is trying to come to terms with it, having reached a point of acceptance that it will always be a part of their life. The domino imagery in the first verse suggests that the singer accepts that there will be struggles and setbacks, but they are moving forward towards a resolution nonetheless. The second verse suggests that the singer has had a chance encounter with someone who is physically broken and suffering, but that this encounter has given them a sense of empathy and connection to others who are struggling.

The chorus speaks to the frustration of trying to overcome pain and heal, but feeling like progress is not being made. The singer seems to be trying different things, but nothing is working, which is why they are "resisting what they cannot change." The lines "Pull me close and let me hold you in / Give me the deeper understanding of who I am" suggest that the singer is seeking some kind of emotional connection in order to gain greater self-awareness and acceptance. The final line, "yeah, I wanna find what can't be found," is a call to keep trying, despite the difficulties.

Overall, "Pain" is a thoughtful and introspective song that speaks to the shared experience of human suffering and the search for meaning and understanding in the face of pain.

This thread right here, totally restores my faith in music of current times being as good, if not a little better than some songs of days gone by.

I think what they have captured here is a vibe many folk needed...respect to these boys...

FILL THE GAP....do it.

We have two songs which seem to be TIME MACHINE numbers which could have been dragged into the modern day from decades ago.....THE CHILD by URBAN SEASCAPE.....and SAILING ON A CLOUD by STEPHEN RUSSELL....pay no heed to small amounts of plays...the future is bright for them both with no massive budget or Record Label behind them...just Joe Public's support.

Maybe we should invent a new chart....TIME MACHINE NUMBERS OF TODAY.

Today is my firstborn son's birthdate. He passed away 3yrs ago due to a fentanyl overdose. As I was thinking of him today, this song came on. First time I ever heard it. Took my breath away, even more when I watched the video. Timothy was a BMX rider and I would take him and his friends into Philly to ride. Thank you so very much for this priceless gift your band as given me.
