1) The Weekend
From humble beginnings in the summer of 1995 when two young girls from London, Canada, Andrea Wasse (vox/guitar) and Lorien Jones (vox/bass) found kindred spirit Lincoln Cushman (keyboards) wandering the streets, The Weekendβs reason for existence has been to rock the tired masses. The Weekend's self-titled debut full-length record, produced by Andy Magoffin at the House of Miracles, contained ten sensational gems that did just that. The Weekendβs fresh-faced approach, infectious vocal harmonies, sweet keyboards, crunchy guitar and heartstring tugging lyrics have become a beacon of rock hope in this era of bland music saturation.
βThe Weekendβ spent 16 weeks in the Top Ten radio charts for Campus Radio nationwide which led them to opening for such notable acts as Green Day, Matthew Good Band, Big Sugar, 54:40 and Default. Their music has been featured on television in episodes of βFamily Law,β Mary-Kate & Ashley Olson's βSo Little Timeβ, and the CBC series βOur Hero.β The Weekendβs pop rock candy floss flavored sound has made them one of the most popular independent bands in the country, being featured on CBC Radio's βJust Concertsβ along with radio and websites around the world. In 2001, MGM Distribution released their debut album domestically in Australia, and there are plans to tour βdown underβ this fall.
2) The Weekend is also the name of the now defunct duo consisting of Abel Tesfaye (now The Weeknd) and Jeremy Rose.
80's Rockstar
The Weekend Lyrics

In your acid-wash jeans in 1983
You, with your big hair
Girls would throw you their underwear
I was only old enough to stare
And wish you were mine
Well, you (you) were my rock 'n' roll dream
I was in love with your hair spray
Your spandex and rebel ways!
I just couldn't wait to see you play
But just look at you today
[Chorus]
My 80's rock star
They wonder where you are
Wish you were here with me
Instead of on the streets
My 80's rock star
They thought you'd go real far
My 80's rock star
Oh, you (you) you'd made & lost your fortune
By the time your second album came and fell
Spent it all on your fast drugs, your fast girls, your fast cars
When the 90's came, you sold your last guitar
[Chorus]
They thought you'd go real far
But you're washed out, and you're lonely, and you're tired
And there's not much left to you to admire
And you gave the world everything you had
And were left with nothing, now how about that?
My 80's rock star
They wonder where you are
Well now you're here with me
Instead of on the streets
My 80's rock star
They thought you'd go real far
My 80's rock star
They wonder where you are
Well now you're here with me
Instead of on the streets
My 80's rock star
They thought you'd go real far
Yeah!
The Weekend's "80's Rockstar" is a song that reflects on a past love interest who once used to be a rock and roll sensation. The opening verse commences with a description of the individual who used to rock the singer's world in 1983 in acid-washed jeans, big hair, and his rockstar status. The singer reminisces about how girls would throw underwear at him, and he would gaze at the individual and hope that they would become his. The second verse continues with the singer's narration of how he was in love with the individual's hair spray, spandex, and rebel ways. The singer couldn't wait to watch him play, but looking at him now, things have changed.
The chorus of the song repeatedly emphasizes the singer's sorrow that his '80s rockstar disappeared and the lack of inspiration from the figure's present-day status. The second part of the chorus elaborates on the rockstar's background; they thought he would go far, but he spent his fortune on drugs, girls, and cars. By the '90s, the rockstar's career was over, and they had sold their last guitar - a sign that their status and music career were officially gone.
In conclusion, "80's Rockstar" by The Weeknd is a narration of lost love and a touching reflection on the downfall of a rockstar who, in the past, was everything. The song highlights the reality that fame can disappear, and with it, one's fortune and reputation. The Weeknd reflects fondly on the 80s era and wishes that his 80s rock star was still with him.
