Aspiring musician and scenester Bob Markley managed to join the group the Laughing Wind in exchange for his connections in the music industry and substantial bankroll. The original five-piece line-up consisted of Michael Lloyd (rhythm guitar, vocals), Shaun Harris (bass guitar, vocals, Danny Harris (lead guitar, vocals), John Ware (drums), and Markley (tambourine, vocals). Although Markley possessed the least musical talent, his expertise in law enabled him to assume control of the group's name and publishing, which generated a divide in the WCPAEB's creative mindset.
The band debuted with the album Volume One in 1966 on the small FiFo record label. In the early years of the group, much was made of the WCPAEB's elaborate psychedelic light shows, which became the focal point of their live performances in Los Angeles. Following the release of Volume One, the WCPAEB signed with Reprise Records, recording three albums with the company, including arguably their most accomplished work Volume 3: A Child's Guide to Good and Evil in 1968. Two additional albums, Where's My Daddy? and Markley, A Group, were distributed on independent labels before the group disbanded in 1970.

Painted green
And a fountain, and a mountain
And a tunnel for me to follow
and a door inside your mind
That you won't open
You are so beautiful and naive with bells on
Give me fantasy
Many times, too many times I see
Everything just the way it is
Let me in, let me in, I'll give you candy.
Let me in, let me in, I'll give you avocados.
That's more than most people have to offer.
You have a perfectly round tongue
Painted green,
And a fountain, and a mountain,
And a tunnel for me to follow,
and a door inside your mind
That you won't open.
You are so beautiful and naive with bells on.
Give me fantasy
Tell me my dreams.
Too many times, too many times I see
you have a perfectly round n tongue painted green
and a fountain and a mountain an d a tunnel for me to follow and a tunnel isndie your mind that you won't open
The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band's song "Buddha" is a surreal and dreamlike exploration of the complexities of human relationships. The lyrics present a vivid, fantastical image of a woman with a "perfectly round tongue painted green" who possesses both external and internal landscapes that the singer longs to explore. However, the woman remains closed off, refusing to open the door inside her mind despite the singer's pleading. Despite this, the singer remains captivated by her beauty and naivete, desiring to please her and fulfill his own fantasies.
The song's surreal imagery and oblique references to Buddhist philosophy invite various interpretations. Some see the woman with the "perfectly round tongue painted green" as a representation of temptation, a siren luring the singer away from the path of enlightenment. Others interpret the song as a commentary on the limitations of language and the difficulty of communication in human relationships. Whatever the interpretation, the song remains a haunting and mysterious meditation on desire, beauty, and the mysteries of the human mind.
