Rainbow Connection
The Whiffenpoofs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why are there so many songs about rainbows,
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it,
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered,
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it,
And look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

All of us under its spell,
We know that it's probably magic

Have you been half asleep? And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it,
It's something that I'm s'posed to be
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,

The lovers, the dreamers, and me

Overall Meaning

The Whiffenpoofs's song Rainbow Connection is a beautiful tribute to the hopeful and optimistic human spirit that reaches out to the inexplicable magic that this world holds. The lyrics marvel at the wonder of rainbows and what lies on the other side, the visions and illusions that they create, and their complete transparency. Many people choose to believe that rainbows are meaningless and frivolous, but those who hold on to their belief that there is magic to be found in this world continue to search for the rainbow connection, where the dreamers, the lovers, and everyone else can find something meaningful and pure.

The lyrics go on to ask why people believe that every wish they make would be answered and granted just because they wished upon the morning star. However, someone believed in it, and the power of that belief made things happen, leading to extraordinary discoveries and events in the world. Maybe that's why we stargaze, wondering what we could see and what is amazing out there; because someday we might find the rainbow connection, where everything makes sense.

The last verse is a call to those who have half-awakened from their slumber to listen to the sweet sound of magic calling to them. It's a voice that has called out to everyone, the young and old, the sailors and dreamers, and it's an undeniable pull that leads them to the rainbow connection. It's a hopeful message, calling out to everyone to stay true to their dreams and never stop believing in the magic that surrounds them.

@inkyguy the person who originally sang this was a baritone? wasn't it the puppeteerr of Kermit the Frog who was a tenor?

inkyguy

Yes, but as a long-time baritone I rue the fact that there are really no solo/spotlight parts for us anymore. Somewhere in the last 50 years the tenor range has taken over that role. Don’t get me wrong. They have beautiful voices. Sexy voices (and extra sexy if they’re cute too.) I wish I could be a cute tenor (preferably blond), but at least better than half of males are not tenors and it would be nice if our voices could be highlighted again too.

Can't believe such a beautiful song came out of a movie about a frog.

PaleRider54

@Paulo Morais Yes. Actually sung by The Carpenters many years ago.

Paulo Morais

The song itself is much more ancient than the Muppets Movie.

Lola Plays games

The movie is my favourite song and btw it’s not only about Kermit the frog it’s about all the muppets so yeah it’s not “only an movie about an frog”

Well you can thank the legendary Paul Williams and also Ken Asher. They wrote these great songs. Paul has a cameo in the movie as the piano player inside the bar. 🙂

Jim Henson was able to touch that spark of creativity only a few can in every generation....

Undoubtedly the BEST version I've ever heard.  Can't wait to see him on Broadway or winning his first Tony.
