Cannon/Party of Special Things To Do
The White Stripes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the stiff wind blows
The flag don't wiggle
In the party of special things to do
I met the ace of love
She took me to her plantation
For the love without separation
In the party of special things to do
It could happen to me
It could happen to you
I met the ace of love
She said I want you to go
To the party of special things to do
And when you're through
I'll be right here waiting for you
Here take these sparks
So my distant cousins can get along with you
Watch out for the mirror man
And Elixir Sue
When I got to the party of special things to do
It wasn't hard to find Elixir Sue
I met all the cards
The wild cards
The one-eye Jill
The red queen
She turned her head
You know what I mean
She turned it back and said
"I got a brand new game I want to lay on you"
I met them all
At the party of special things to do
When I was done
I was far from through
I returned to the ace of love
Now wouldn't you?
I met them all
The camel wore a nightie
The camel wore a nightie
At the party of special things to do
Elixir Sue
It wasn't hard to find liquor at the do
I met all the cards
The wild cards
You know what I mean
Then she turned it back and said
"I got a brand new game I think I want to lay on you"
I met elixir Sue

At the party of special things to do
It's so special

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The White Stripes's song Party of Special Things to Do are cryptic and packed with surreal imagery, but the song appears to narrate an Alice in Wonderland-like journey through a festive and fantastical land, with the singer encountering a range of bizarre characters and experiences. The first stanza sets the surreal tone, proclaiming that when the stiff wind blows, the flag doesn't wiggle - an image that defies gravity and reality. The ace of love then takes the singer to her plantation for the love without separation, which could be interpreted as an allusion to a utopian love that transcends race, class, and other social categories.

The second stanza describes the singer's journey to the party of special things to do, where he encounters a number of oddities and warnings, including the mirror man and elixir Sue. The wild cards, one-eye Jill, and red queen all make appearances, adding to the sense of a carnival-like atmosphere where anything goes. The camel wearing a nightie could be seen as another surreal image, contributing to the general sense of absurdity and whimsy that runs throughout the lyrics. The singer ultimately returns to the ace of love, suggesting that the journey has been transformative or spiritually significant in some way.

Overall, the lyrics of Party of Special Things to Do are open to interpretation, but they seem to celebrate the power of imagination, joy, and connection. on Candy Cane Children

The meaning of this song is basically saying the older you get, the less fun Christmas becomes usually do to adulthood. The lines "don't you know your name?...", probably refers to the adults telling kids to grow up as if they're saying "Do you know how old you are? You're getting too old for this stuff." Probably why he put the lines "nobody knows how to talk to children". Also, he puts the lines "think again" after a thought of one of the kids thinking of wishing to participate in Christmas activities. As if they're thinking "Yeah I probably AM too old for this.." "364 more tears girl" the sadness of getting older. Not participating feels like a missed opportunity and causes even more sadness..
