I'm Slowly Turning Into You
The White Stripes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm slowly turning into you, but you don't know this; I told the truth
You say I'm lying and I never really tell you the truth
But your face is getting older, so put your head on my shoulder
Yeah, put your head on my shoulder

Yesterday it hit me that I do all the little things that you do
Except the same little things that you do are annoying
They're annoying as Hell, in fact; it kinda struck a little bell, in fact
I like to keep my little shell intact

And I'm slowly turning into you
And I'm slowly turning into you

Then something else came to mind that was the mirror; it made everything clearer
That you're more beautiful, compelling and stronger; it didn't take much longer
Just for me to realize I love all the little things and the beauty that they're gonna bring
I dig your little laugh, and I'm lovin' your quick wit; I even love it when you're faking it
And it might sound a little strange for me to say to you, but I'm proud to be you

And I'm slowly turning into you
And I'm slowly turning into you
And I'm slowly turning into you
And I'm slowly turning into you

Overall Meaning

The White Stripes's song "I'm Slowly Turning Into You" is a reflection on the transformation of oneself through a close relationship. The lyrics detail the singer's awareness that they are turning into their partner in appearance and behavior, yet the partner remains unaware of this phenomenon. The first stanza sets the tone for the song, as the singer acknowledges the metamorphosis they are undergoing and admits the truth to their partner, who doesn't believe their confession. The second stanza talks about the realization of how annoying the partner's habits are, but as the singer looks deeper, they realize the beauty in the little things the partner does that make them unique.

The chorus repeats the phrase "And I'm slowly turning into you" three times, emphasizing the inevitability of the transformation. The song ends on a positive note as the singer embraces their growing resemblance to the partner, acknowledging that they are proud to be together because of the endearing qualities they share.

Overall, the song explores the bittersweet nature of being in a committed relationship, the sacrifice of individuality and the beauty in becoming connected with someone else. The song captures the nuances of love in a way that rings true to many.

@JTGemini3

One of my favorites. I actually think Icky Thump was their best record.

@murdermatics

I think it may just be Jacks magnum opus. Although the other albums are excellent from start to finish Icky Thump kind of felt like the album Jack wanted to make all along.

300mph blues is one of my favorite songs of all time by him.

@JimPoe70

Incredible song, it kills me every time. Meg's stop/start beat is just so outrageously funky and awesome. When I saw them play this at Madison Square Garden in NYC in 2007, all of a sudden the lights are shining on the biggest disco ball I've ever seen, hovering over them - just for this song, it was so weird and cool. Something about that disco ball highlighted how funky this song is.

bwaaaah duh duh

@nomeansradio

I know, most of you might not agree, but this is the best White Stripes' song ever! Period :)

@arianadiaz6154

+nomeansradio I kind of agree

@Albeit_Jordan

I don't know, what about There's No Home For You Here, Girl?

@gelatinejaap

Ball and biscuit, imo.

@TheReligionisfiction

Apparently you haven't heard catch hell blues, ball and biscuit, or little cream soda. Regardless all of icky thump is good.

@zoso11

100% agree!
