Truth Doesn't Make a Noise
The White Stripes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My baby's got a heart of stone
Can't you people just leave her alone
She never did nothing to hurt you
So just leave her alone

The motion of her tiny hands
And the quiver of her bones below
Are the signs of a girl alone
And tell you everything
You need to know

I can't explain it
I feel it often
Every time I see her face
But the way you treat her
Fills me with rage and I
Want to tear apart the place

You try to tell her what to do
And all she does is stare at you

Her stare is louder than your voice
Because truth doesn't make a noise

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Truth Doesn't Make a Noise" by The White Stripes tell a story of a person's frustration towards the mistreatment of their significant other. The song starts with the singer defending their loved one, urging people to leave her alone as she has done nothing wrong. The following lines depict the fragility of the girl, as signified by her tiny hands and quivering bones, but also assert that her loneliness makes her stronger than people think. The singer can't explain the emotions they feel every time they see her and are filled with rage at the way other people treat her.

The chorus is a powerful statement about the girl's silent strength, likening her stare to be louder than the voices of the people who try to tell her what to do. The truth that she embodies and upholds doesn't need to be spoken aloud as it is evident in the way she carries herself. The song's themes revolve around individuality, strength, and agency, all of which are expressed through the haunting, stripped-down instrumental style and Jack White's distinctive vocals.

on Candy Cane Children

The meaning of this song is basically saying the older you get, the less fun Christmas becomes usually do to adulthood. The lines "don't you know your name?...", probably refers to the adults telling kids to grow up as if they're saying "Do you know how old you are? You're getting too old for this stuff." Probably why he put the lines "nobody knows how to talk to children". Also, he puts the lines "think again" after a thought of one of the kids thinking of wishing to participate in Christmas activities. As if they're thinking "Yeah I probably AM too old for this.." "364 more tears girl" the sadness of getting older. Not participating feels like a missed opportunity and causes even more sadness..
