Candle
The White Tie Affair Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took a ride on a February morning,
Just getting over it and dealing with the mourning,
I started thinking out loud: I'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired,
My baby's flying off the edge of the road,
She's saying, "I'm so sorry about that note",
That left me all alone,
But I'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired
Somebody turn the lights on,
Somebody tell me what's wrong,
I'd be lying if I told you,
Losing you was something I could handle,
Somebody turn the lights on,
Somebody tell me how long,
All this darkness will surround you,
Cause I'm burning for you,
Burning like a candle

Seven days since I've seen your face,
Seven nights I have laid to waste,
I'm burning out now,
I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired,
I know we're hanging at the end of the road,
We've flown too high, make a swarm too low,
I heard a screaming out loud,
I heard a screaming out loud

Somebody turn the lights on,
Somebody tell me what's wrong,
I'd be lying if I told you,
Losing you was something I could handle,
Somebody turn the lights on,
Somebody tell me how long,
All this darkness will surround you,
Cause I'm burning for you,
Burning like a candle

Think,
All the things that you say,
What are the things that you mean,
What are the things that you say to me,
Cause your tragedy,
A queen for his majesty,
All this blasphemy,
Your kingdom is crumbling,
You're a tragedy,
A queen for his majesty,
All this blasphemy,
Your kingdom is crumbling,

Somebody turn the lights on,
Somebody tell me what's wrong,
I'd be lying if I told you,
Losing you was something I could handle,
Somebody turn the lights on,
Somebody tell me how long,
All this darkness will surround you,
Cause I'm burning for you,
Burning like a candle

Burning for you,
Burning like a candle,

Burning for you,
Burning like a candle

Overall Meaning

The White Tie Affairโ€™s โ€œCandleโ€ is a song about heartbreak and the struggle that comes with moving on. The first verse describes the singerโ€™s state after going through a breakup. He expresses how fed up he is of being tired and miserable all the time. The lyrics, โ€œI'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired,โ€ relay the exhaustion and sadness that he feels. Additionally, he mentions that his ex-girlfriend has written a note to him before leaving him. The next verse goes on to detail the absence of the singerโ€™s lover, both physically and emotionally. He has not seen her in seven days, and he has laid to waste seven nights. The hopelessness in the situation is highlighted by the repeated phrase โ€œIโ€™m sick and tired of being sick and tired.โ€

The chorus is the crux of the song, where the singer begs for help in finding a way to move on. He talks about the darkness that surrounds him and compares his burning passion to a candle - a flame that is not sustainable. He is asking for someone to help lift him out of the darkness, but he also realizes that his loss may be too great to overcome. Further, in the bridge, the lyrics switch from being addressed to his ex-girlfriend and instead are spoken to himself. It is here that he tries to make sense of everything that has happened and understand what she meant to him. However, it is not until the end of the song that he returns to the chorus, an indication that he is still searching for a way to deal with the aftermath of the failed relationship.

I'm so happy for Chris for finally getting the attention and acknowledgement he deserves. This band got me through high school. I prefer their sound to his new stuff though.

This song actually really makes me miss high school.
Bring on the eyeliner, Boys Like Girls, We the Kings, Alltime Low, Mayday Parade, and A Day to Remember.

EDIT:
did they actually blur out the beer label? That's kinda funny.

I heard this on a random MySpace playlist just now from Apple Music. The second the singing started I remembered all the lyrics and how much I loved this song when it dropped originally. Itโ€™s crazy how music can transport you to a different place and time so fast. โค๏ธ
