Of All The Dreams
The Wild Reeds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was a daisy white and true
and you were a violet wild and blue
and we danced in the springtime air
I was an oak tree old and wise
and you were the field in which I'd lie
we grew together forever tangled in the dirt
but of all the things I could I be I wanna be with you
and of all the dreams I could dream I wanna dream of you
I was a firefly on a southern summer night and you were the child drawn to my light you finally caught me and kept me in your favorite glass jar
I was a traveler in search of gold and you my companion the open road we shared a path that only star could make
but of all the things I could I be I wanna be with you
and of all the dreams I could dream I wanna dream of you
I was a poet alone with my thoughts and you were my poems all I got you shared my story long after i was gone
I was the moon full of light and you were the wolf howling at the night you waited for me with every setting sun
but of all the things I could I be I wanna be with you
and of all the dreams I could dream I wanna dream of you

yeah of all the things I could I be I wanna be with you and of all the dreams that I dream my favorite one is you
Cause you are you are you are the one I want

Overall Meaning

The Wild Reeds's song "Of All The Dreams" speaks of the various forms the singer has taken throughout their journey in life, and the different roles their loved one has played in their life. Starting with the metaphor of a daisy and a violet, the lyrics suggest that the two beings were quite dissimilar but complemented one another beautifully. This symbiotic relationship carried on with the metaphor of an oak tree and a field intertwined in the dirt, showing how they were interdependent on one another. The song moves on to speak of a journey, where the singer was the traveler in search of gold, and their loved one was the open road, which is the perfect metaphor for a companion who is timeless and has been built for exploration.

The lyrics then take the guise of a poet, who is nothing without the poems they conjure. Here, the singer acknowledges that their loved one is their sole inspiration, keeping their stories alive long after they're gone. Finally, in the last verse, the moon is used to indicate constancy, while the wolf is symbolic of hunger and desire. These elements are beautifully juxtaposed with the singer admitting that they want to be nothing but with their loved one, and the dream that they want to live is nothing but one that involves this special person.
