Techno Fan
The Wombats Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

East London's not a bomb site
It is a treasure chest
We use our penguin costumes
More than our evening dress
She said I should come over
Though the music's not my type
Don't you know I'd chop a limb off
Just to have a good time

Shut up and move with me, move with me, or, or get out of my face
I didn't queue for an hour to leave straight away
Shut up and stay with me, stay with me, or, or let go of my hand
The lasers fill our minds with empty plans
I never knew I was a techno fan

This is not a weird weekend
It's an angry wormhole
I'm talking like a city boy
And drinking with a northern soul
She said I should come over
Though it's carnage at times
It still seems I'd chop a limb off
Before I put up a fight

Shut up and move with me, move with me, or, or get out of my face
I didn't queue for an hour to leave straight away
Shut up and stay with me, stay with me, or, or let go of my hand
The lasers fill our minds with empty plans
I never knew I was a techno

We are the 1980s
We are the Detroit lights
And I never wanna, I never wanna see this stop
I'm in debt to you
But don't feed me plant food

Shut up and move with me, move with me, or, or get out of my face
I didn't spend 20 sheets and not cut a shape
Shut up and stay with me, stay with me, or, or let go of my hand
The lasers fill our minds with empty plans
I never knew I was a techno fan

I never knew I was a techno fan
I never knew I was a techno fan

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of The Wombats' song Techno Fan set the scene for a wild night out in East London, an area associated with the city's bustling nightlife. Rather than seeing the area as a dangerous place, the band refer to it as a "treasure chest"; one that is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The imagery of the penguin costumes and evening dresses suggests that anything goes in East London, and that people are not afraid to stand out and be flamboyant.

The next verse continues with this theme of unpredictability, with the singer referring to the experience as an "angry wormhole". The use of the phrase "northern soul" suggests that The Wombats are referring to a specific type of music scene, one which is built around a strong sense of community and identity. Despite the potential for chaos and carnage, the singer is willing to take the risk of losing a limb, just to have a good time.

The chorus ties the song together, urging the listener to "move with me" and let go of any inhibitions. There is an emphasis on living in the moment, with the lasers filling our minds with "empty plans". The final verse hints at the nostalgia associated with the 1980s, and ends with a reference to Frank Zappa's song "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow", reminding the listener that there are limits to what they should do to chase a good time.

This is one of my all time favourite songs. I was OBSESSED with it about 2 years ago and had it on repeat all day every day. One of my best friends passed away in 2012 and since then this song has had a lot of negativity attached to it because it reminded me of an awful time in my life. I haven't listened to it since. My eyes are filled with tears right now and from now on I am going to attach beautiful memories of her to it instead of the sad memories.

I've had songs like that, where they remind or reminded me of bad memories. Such as when I first heard DaftPunk, my girlfriend shared them with me while she was away in France for 3 months, or when my Mom died there were a lot of songs that had to do with death or loving someone that is far away, which were ruined for me for a long time.
