Coffee Eyes
The Wonder Years Lyrics

Two dollars, twenty-seven cents
January seventeenth, 2006
Here in a diner with my friends
Talking about how the year went
A few years later I walk in
Patti knew my drink
And she asked where the hell we've been
You used to come here every night
It's not the same without you kids
I cut my hand on a piece of glass
The time we found Dave half dead in the parking lot
And spent the rest of the night in the ER
I cut my hand on a piece of glass
And I hope the scar lasts
So I don't forget that

There's been a table for me there
Through coffee eyes and blank stares
Our late night affairs
There's always been a table for me there
So you can try to forget or say it's the past
You know you'll always end up right back where you left

I ended up here late at night on Thanksgiving
The fall that Colleen left
This was a place to call home
When it felt like the world didn't want us
I watched Mike slash Mon's tires
We laughed about it later
I watched friendships dissolve
In the booth on the back wall
I cut my hand on a piece of glass
And I hope the scar lasts

There's always been a table for me there
Through coffee eyes and blank stares
Our late night affairs
There's always been a table for me there
So you can try to forget or say it's the past
You know you'll always end up right back where you left

There's always been a table for me there
There's always been a table for me there
There's always been a table for me there
Through all of the years
There's always been a table for me there
Through all of the years
There's always been a table for me there

Through all of the years
There's always been a table for me there

Overall Meaning

The Wonder Years' song "Coffee Eyes" is a nostalgic look back at a diner that served as a home base for the singer and his friends. The song reflects on specific memories and experiences that took place in the diner, such as the time they found a friend half dead in the parking lot and spent the night in the ER, or the time the singer's friend slashed another friend's tires. The lyrics also mentions a girl named Colleen leaving in the fall, which could be a reference to a breakup or someone moving away.

Despite the ups and downs experienced in the diner, it remained a constant in the singer's life. He mentions that no matter how much time passes or how hard he tries to forget, he always ends up back at the diner where there's always been a table for him. The nostalgia and comfort of the diner is emphasized in the chorus, where the singer refers to "late night affairs" and "coffee eyes and blank stares".

The song can be interpreted in different ways depending on the listener's personal experiences, but overall it speaks to the importance of a sense of home and belonging in one's life, even if that sense of home is found in an unexpected place like a diner.

Was listening to this album with my best friends on a late night drive back home to CT from Cape Cod, Mass. It was our last hoorah before going off to college. This song came on and, man, it makes me so sad, but it makes me love my best friends that much more. I never want to lose them.

Brendan Fisher

Hey man. Are you still close with that group of friends? I felt the same as you at the age of 18. Now I'm 31 and we've all drifted apart. Life got in the way.

johnny longsnap

I’ve graduated high school and college since this song has come out and I’ve always remembered the lyrics “you’ll always end up right back where you left” and it’s crazy how after moving three times and even to another state 700 miles away I’m right back in the same town I left.

facgce

april gregory

Goddammit, I can't handle how much I love this band. Their songs have helped me feel so much better, letting me know I'm not alone. Yup, I'm getting cliched.
