Heroes
The X Factor Finalists 2010 Lyrics

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, just for one day

And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time

'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we're lovers, and that is that
Though nothing will keep us together
We could steal time just for one day
We can be heroes for ever and ever
What d'you say?

I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, for ever and ever
Oh we can be Heroes, just for one day

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be Heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day

I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame, was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes, just for one day

We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
Just for one day
We can be Heroes

We're nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay
But we could be safer, just for one day

Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh, just for one day

Overall Meaning

The X Factor Finalists 2010's song “Heroes” is a David Bowie cover which was originally released in 1977. The song speaks about two people who are in love and are willing to be heroes for one day just to prove their love is real. The first verse is about the couple being strong and powerful as they are called king and queen. They can beat their enemies just for this moment because they are heroes. The second verse goes on to describe how the couple is flawed, and the two have vices, but it does not matter because they are in love. They have a limited amount of time, but they will be heroes for the day. The lyrics then reference dolphins, and how the couple wishes they could swim like them. It is said that even though nothing can keep them together, they will always beat those who stand in their way. They can become heroes forever and always, and they will be themselves for this day.

The lyrics then take a somewhat political turn when the couple is remembered standing in front of a wall, and guns are being shot above their heads. Even so, they kiss as if they are untouchable, as if they will always triumph over hatred, and sadness. The shame of this event is on the other side, and they will always come out on top. The chorus then repeats that anyone can become a hero, even if it's just for one day. The lyrics then say that they are nothing and nothing can help them. They question if they are lying and, if so, it's better not to stay. Even so, they could be safe, even for just one day.
