Noah's Ark
The Young Heretics Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Noahs ark can't save us all
Binary against the squall
And in it's wake
Good men will fall
And finally we can move on

We have so much to answer for
We asked for help to start this war

Can we forgive
The things we've done
Take our things
And move along

Safe and sound
Can we abstain
From looking to that ark again

And at our end
We find ourselves
No closer to heaven
No closer to hell

Can we forgive
The things we've done

Take our things
And move along

Overall Meaning

The opening line "Noah's ark can't save us all" is a reference to the biblical story of Noah's Ark, where Noah built an ark to save himself and his family along with two of every species of animals from a great flood. The following line "Binary against the squall" suggests that the world is divided into two opposing forces, perhaps good vs evil, and that these forces are battling against each other amidst chaos ("squall"). The next line "And in its wake, good men will fall" implies that even though the world may be divided, innocent people will still suffer the consequences of the conflict.

The lyrics then shift to an introspective tone, with the singer asking if humanity can forgive themselves for starting wars and causing destruction. The line "We have so much to answer for, we asked for help to start this war" suggests that humans may have been the ones who initiated conflict, rather than being innocent bystanders. The following lines "Can we forgive the things we've done, take our things and move along" suggests a need to move past the mistakes of the past and start anew.

The final lines "Safe and sound, can we abstain from looking to that ark again, and at our end, we find ourselves no closer to heaven, no closer to hell" suggests that despite all the conflict and chaos, humans are still seeking safety and stability. However, the idea of looking to Noah's ark for salvation is futile, as it did not truly bring the people any closer to heaven or hell. The song ultimately poses the question of whether humanity can learn from its mistakes and move past them, or if it will continue to repeat them.
