The group first formed in July 2009 after Ross and Walker left Panic! At The Disco, citing creative differences. The duo released their first new track, "Change" via MySpace on July 28, 2009 while shopping around for a record label to release their debut album. In October 2009, another new track, "The Other Girl" was previewed on Mark Ronson's show on East Village Radio. Band members Murray and Soukal joined in December 2009 and White was added to the lineup soon after.
In March 2010, The Young Veins were signed with One Haven Music and not long after, re-released their first single "Change" via iTunes on April 5, 2010 and subsequent singles "Take a Vacation!" and "Everyone But You" in May 2010. Their first full-length album, entitled Take A Vacation! was released on June 8, 2010. It was recorded at Castle Oak Studios and Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, CA. Several tracks were produced by Rob Mathes while the others were produced by Alex Greenwald.
On December 10th 2010 the band announced they were going on indefinite hiatus.

Of a place we'd never been
Defiance
And ever since I was a kid
They said, "just stay away from there"
Boy don't you ever live
In defiance
Defiance
And from the outside looking in
I sure do make an easy target
It's nice to think that you are always wanted
And I'm not afraid to laugh
And I don't mind taking a photograph
Cause you don't ask for my autograph
In defiance
Defiance
Yet she said it was rusted lead
Their love could never live again
But they found a way to make it stay
In defiance, she asked
In defiance, she asked
"Why can't we just be friends?"
This kind of thing always happens
I fell in love again
With defiance
The Young Veins's song "Defiance" is a poignant and reflective piece about defying expectations, rules, and conventions. In the opening lines, the band seeks out a place that they have been told to stay away from, indicating their defiance towards authority and the status quo. This defiance is reinforced by the chorus as they repeat the word 'defiance', which becomes a rallying cry for anyone who wants to resist the boundaries imposed by society. The song conveys the idea that people who dare to break free and live on their own terms will always be misunderstood and judged from the 'outside looking in.'
The second verse suggests that the band members are not afraid to be themselves, regardless of how others might perceive them. They do not seek validation from others and are comfortable in their own skin, as evidenced by the line 'I'm not afraid to laugh, and I don't mind taking a photograph.' The final verse talks about a relationship that has been deemed impossible but defies the odds and continues to thrive against all odds. Once again, the chorus becomes a call to action to reject skepticism and embrace the power of defiance.
Overall, "Defiance" is a song that celebrates rebellion, individuality, and the courage to defy societal norms. It encourages listeners to stay true to themselves, stand up for what they believe in and forge their own path, no matter how unconventional or unpopular it may seem.
