Leave Me Be
The Zombies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If it seems that I'm too quiet, that's 'cause I'm missin' her
My mind tells me I have to fight, but I can't help missin' her

[Chorus]
You'd better leave me alone, you'd better leave me alone
Until I can think about her without feelin' sorry for myself
You'd better leave me be till I don't need her anymore
I don't wanna see her again until I'm sure I'm over her

But still feeling tired and wanting is not like I thought it would be
Love just cannot end at parting; my world's dropped from under me

[Chorus]

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Zombie's song "Leave Me Be" tells a story of a man who is struggling to move on from a breakup. The opening lines suggest that he is trying to keep his emotions in check and not show his pain. However, he is finding it difficult to fight the overwhelming feeling of missing his former love. The chorus shows how he is unable to deal with the situation and begs to be left alone until he can overcome his heartbreak. The second verse suggests that despite his efforts to move on, he still finds himself longing for his past relationship. The song ends on a somber note with the refrain "Oh, oh, oh, oh," emphasizing the heartache that the character is feeling.

The chorus of the song is a plea for space and time to heal. It represents a situation that many people can relate to: the need to distance oneself from a past relationship to move forward. The song tells a story that is emotionally charged, powerful, and relatable. It's a lamentation of a relationship that has ended, and the singer portrays that feeling authentically through his delivery.

My band did three Zombies songs in the 1960s. "She's Not There," "Tell Her No," and "Leave Me Be." I still play this one on occasion. We saw them in concert the other night and they played for a couple of hours. Magnificent.
