Over The Edge
The Wipers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's just a mockery
Don't need to waste my time
You know I've really tried
You take and never give
Make it so hard to live
I'm hangin' on a ledge
Push me over the edge
Don't do the things you do
Don't have to oblige you
Makin choices on my own
Don't buy their trite or drone
Grow up and be a man
Drop dead right where you stand
I'm hangin' on a ledge
Push me over the edge
The Wipers’ song “Over the Edge” is a very straightforward and honest take on the singer’s frustration with someone or something that seems to be holding him back. The first verse starts with a statement that “It’s not the truth I see / It’s just a mockery” which refers to the fact that there are lies, facades, and illusions all around him, and he is not going to waste his time trying to decipher them. The second line of the same verse “Don’t need to waste my time” indicates the feeling of frustration and disappointment that has built up to a point where he doesn’t see the point of continuing to engage with whatever it is that is causing him trouble.
The singer then goes on to explain the reason for his being tired and frustrated in the chorus “You take and never give / Make it so hard to live / I'm hangin' on a ledge / Push me over the edge”. Here the singer feels like he is hanging by a thread having to give more than he receives, which is making it almost impossible to survive. The phrase “Push me over the edge” indicates that he is at his breaking point, and if anyone else pushes him, he may just snap. The second verse is more an emotional and empowering statement, saying that the singer is not willing to conform to someone else's will or let anyone else dictate how he should live his life. The last line of the song “I’m hangin’ on a ledge / Push me over the edge” reiterates the singer’s frustration and desperation to escape his current situation.
