Abide With Me
Thelonious Monk Lyrics
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, oh abide with me
I need Thy presence every passing hour
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine Lord abide with me
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death oh Lord abide with me

This track would appear to be Monk's tip of the hat to his NC gospel roots. It is a very straight playing of one verse of this standard Christian hymn found in virtually all hymnals in all churches.

who other than Monk would think of starting one of the greatest jazz albums of the 50's with a one minute hymn? What a wonderful touch! It's quite lovely and the horns sound beautiful.

Well, as Bird used to say, "The Monk runs deep."

this is a beautiful hymn written in 1861 with words from the 1840s. It is a hymn from the church of Christ. Very beautiful. I did know of this song previous to my membership in the church and always loved it. It's meant to be sung in four-part acapella. On the album, it's fun to hear the swing of jazz come right in after the hymn! Thank you for posting this. :)

Actually, although probably sung in the Church of Christ as well as many other denominations, "Abide with Me" is a hymn by Scottish Anglican Henry Francis Lyte.

um, the album's title is "Monk's Music" NOT "Thelonious Monk's Music" although the rest of the album actually is Thelonious Monk's music this particular tune is just Monk's Music.
