This ranks among the very best recorded Monk footage. There is a captivating depth to the sound, each instrument shines. The rhythm was never more propelling. I love that band, get those Monkish chords!

Henri de Lagardère Great clip, indeed ! And TM was amongst the very, very best, in those heady nostalgic days of just magical Jazz. Enjoy & Cheers!

@jerryjames4090

Yes, indeed! Wholeheartedly agree

@vivvpprof

I love that the bass line is changed ever so slightly here and there, effectively introducing 'interjected dominant chords' (a term which sadly anglosaxon theory of harmony is lacking) and creating this feel of rushing forward. Brilliant.

Very insightful evaluation of a masterpiece performance, probably my most beloved live acts of his, along with 'Blue Monk' 1966, live in Norway

The T Monk Quartet did after/before this 1963 Japanese concert also a tour in Australia/New Zealand. I was very fortunate to see this fantastic group in the Sydney Town Hall. Mr Monk, with his Porky-Pie hat, at times used to walk around, with his back turned. Or disappeared from the stage when Charlie Rouse did his superbly improvisational extended solo’s. This incredible quartet was utterly mesmerising and has captivated me to this day! Still got all his (mainly on the CBS-label) LP’s. Good to see this clip, with sweet memories flooding back, and thank you for that Don. Cheers!

WOW is all I can say. Amazing how well that bass is coming through.

@kfs173

These guys are unconscious, just phenomenal!

Great great video! Performances like this is why the tenor sax is one of the best instruments.

@billystrayhornsghost

The most underrated Tenor Charlie Rouse.Very distinctive style on the horn.MONK new how to pick em' Trane,Griffin all sounding bad to the bone with the master.
