Been listening to this tune for years since my days in college in the mid 90's. Still can't get over the complexity and beauty of how it's performed! Love it! Jazz to the nth degree!

One of Charlie Rouse's finer solos. He achieves a tone that perfectly complements Monk's sound, and he's had time to work out his approach to this particular song. Great.

Charles Barry

Thelonious Monk was a unique pianist. He has been accused of having poor technique. That is according to European standards. His compositions need his unorthodox methods of playing. A European pianist tried to play Monk's piano compositions using orthodox techniques. In doing so the effects of the pieces were lost.

How insightful, Charles

@saucy risi close people to Thelonius said that early in his 20's (late 1930's) he used to play like Art Tatum, a technique god, but that he left this approach during the early 1940's. I think at least in the 'American Composer' documentary they say so, or in 'Straight no Chaser' documentary, can't remember wich one it was

@saucy risi Yes, he did. "Juilliard has never offered a specific jazz curriculum, although Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis, Fats Waller, Thelonious Monk and other jazz musicians studied there." From the New York Times.

pickinstone that's cool but where did you read that, is it true? i can't find anything.

Monk studied piano at Julliard... He knew EXACTLY what he was doing when he played piano. White critics just enjoyed calling him sloppy at the time so that they could feel better about their own ineptitude. Just saying.
