I Don't Stand A Ghost of a Chance With You
Thelonious Monk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I need your love so badly, I love you, oh, so madly
But I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you!
I thought at last I'd found you, but other lovers surround you
And "I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you!"
If you'd surrender just for a tender kiss or two
You might discover, that I'm the lover meant for you
And I'd be true, but what's the good of scheming
I know I must be dreaming

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Thelonious Monk's song, "I Don't Stand A Ghost of a Chance With You," express the singer's deep longing and love for someone they feel they can never have. The use of the term "ghost of a chance" emphasizes the impossibility of the situation, highlighting the singer's awareness that they are not the only one pursuing this person. The line "If you'd surrender just for a tender kiss or two" speaks to the power dynamic at play, with the singer being in a lesser position and hoping to win the affections of someone who holds more power.

The second stanza continues this theme by emphasizing the singer's resignation to the situation. They know that their desires are futile, and "what's the good of scheming" when they "must be dreaming." This feeling of powerlessness in love is a common one, and the song effectively captures the emotions that accompany such a situation.

Overall, "I Don't Stand A Ghost of a Chance With You" is a melancholic and introspective ballad that explores themes of unrequited love and the pain of longing for someone who may never feel the same way.

Nobody can say a word after hearing Monk play, and there's seldom even 1 dislike on a video of his...a unique voice that was introverted it's hard to understand what he tries to tell us, genius!

@layoutzz

This is one of my favorite songs and I love Monk's version because he roughens up the edges and takes away the smoothness (i.e., Frank Sinatra's, Bing Crosby's and even Etta James' versions are very smooth and slick). Monks chords underline the pain that comes with not having a ghost of a chance. Very nice.

layoutzz Etta James’s version off her Mystery Lady cd is the absolute best

Well, folks . . . even if you're not overly fond of his interpretation, after listening you damn well know that your ears have been stretched out of their usual position, and, by itself, maybe that's a good thing . . . Gary in Arizona

Monk’s sense of timing and harmonics was so original and cosmic and un-pretentious. He just oozed music at a higher level than everyone else…….
