I Love You
Thelonious Monk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someday he'll come along
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay

He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand
Then in a little while
He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won't say a word

Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
That's meant for two
From which I'll never roam
Who would, would you

And so all else above
I'm dreaming of the man I love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Thelonious Monk's "The Man I Love" reveal a sense of hopefulness and longing for love. The song is about the anticipation of meeting the perfect partner, “the man I love,” who will provide the kind of love and security in life that fulfills one’s needs. The lyrics collaborate with the melody to convey a feeling of comfort and simplicity. It begins with a sense of yearning for that perfect partner. The lyrics “someday he'll come along, the man I love” highlight that the singer is waiting for someone special to come in their life, someone who is “big and strong” – qualities that provide protection and security.

The second stanza goes deeper into the singer's dreamy imagination, as she tries to imagine how they will feel and act when they finally meet. The lyrics bring forth the idea of the possibility of some kind of telepathic connection as she says "he'll look at me and smile I'll understand, then in a little while, he'll take my hand, and though it seems absurd, I know we both won't say a word". The last stanza touches the point of the scenery of their relationship as she touches on building a longetivity that confines two, something that can provide fulfilment, safety, and love.

Overall, the song portrays a positive, promising message of love, an everlasting hopefulness for that perfect other-half. The melody, backed by Monk's intricate playing, compliments the lyrics in a manner that is captivating and pure.

Rudy Vallee wrote this in about '28 or '29 and below are the lyrics. Thank you, Praguedive for this tender and loving interpretation by Monk. -------------------------------------------------- ----- ---- ---- I love you, I love you, I love you,
Sweetheart of all my dreams;
I love you, I can't live without you,
My life is empty, it seems.

You may do what you may,
Whatever you say,
You know that I'll always love you this way!

I love you, I love you, I love you,
Sweetheart of all my dreams;
It seems,
Sweetheart of all my dreams.

You may do what you may,
Whatever you say,
You know that I'll always love you this way!

I love you, love you, more and more I'll always love you,
Sweetheart of all my dreams,
It seems
You are my sweetheart of all my dreams!

Monk's stride piano & gospel roots come out loud and clear in this beautiful standard. Although Monk's compositions are legendary, I love how he pours his heart out on old standards such as this!

This song would be perfect as the main theme for a period film about the 20's or 30's America. The innocence and guile of Monk's interpretation of this tune is the reason it can be appreciated in our own time. He always had the gift of making any old corny Tin Pan Alley song his own, by his own love of that tune's particular simplicity,,thererfore transforming it into something much more than what appeared on the surface alone.

Discovered this guy on the radio in 2006 as a teenager. Couldn't stand modern pop music, was getting tired of classic rock so listened to the jazz/classical station and this was playing. The DJ was like "that was Thelonious Monk" didn't know what Thelonious was or meant but wrote down "Monk piano" , googled that and started my jazz journey there.

i think this song was misidentified as Is It True What They Say About Dixie in both the original recording and in the film Straight No Chaser, where a live performance was played at the end during the credits and struck me as a very sad conclusion to this movie after we had been made to feel closer to this wonderful person and just witnessed mourners passing by his casket. i'll always associate his beautiful interpretation(s) of this piece with that scene altho of course this studio version on a quality piano is absolutely beautiful.
