It seems to me like Monk is having a hell of a good time playing. His music is unusual, bouncy, fun, crazy... Monk was one of a kind...love his music. What a genius!

Blakey and Monk were one of the all-time great musical marriages.

A person can spend all day trying to define what is so endearing and appealing about Monk's compositions and his performances.  One could comment on the eccentricities and the playfulness.  One could even comment on how much more rich the piano harmonies were during the bass solo.  And when finished, one might have some pretty pedantic analyses.  And then one fact remains:  His music IS captivating, and that's the magic.

That's well put! I agree with that comment

His music's just built different

As Charlie Rouse once told me,Monk's music was "simple and correct " That is a large part of its magical appeal

For those seeking this recording on an album, I found it on two different compilation albums: "The Complete Black Lion & Vogue Recordings of Thelonious Monk" and "The Complete London Collection".

If it was the 71 date it must have been when the group with Dizzy, Stitt, Winding was on your. I heard them in NY, I forget what they were called.
Monk's secret was that he didn't improvise but just replayed the melody so the listener always heard the tune. Similar why Erroll Garner and Ahmad Jamal were popular. You always heard the melody in their solos, embroidered they might be. It was like Pop Music. Heard Monk in NY 62-64 when he was at the top of his game.
