I Surrender Dear
Thelonious Monk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pride, sad, splendid liar,
Sworn enemy of love
Kept my lips from saying
Things I was thinking of.
But now my pride you've humbled,
I've cast it to the winds,
Broken, beaten, sick at heart
My confession begins.

We've played the game of stay away
But it cost more that I can pay.
Without you I can't make my way,
I surrender, dear.

I may seem proud, I may act gay,
It's just a pose, I'm not that way,
'Cause deep down in my heart I say
I surrender, dear.

Little mean things we were doing
Must have been part of the game,
Lending a spice to the wooing,
But I don't care who's to blame.
When stars appear and shadows fall,
Why then you'll hear My poor heart call,
To you my love, my life, my all
I surrender, dear.

We've played the game of stay away
But it cost more that I can pay.
Without you I can't make my way,
I surrender, dear.

I may seem proud, I may act gay,
It's just a pose, I'm not that way,
'Cause deep down in my heart I say
I surrender, dear.

Little mean things we were doing
Must have been part of the game,
Lending a spice to the wooing,
But I don't care who's to blame.
When stars appear And shadows fall,

Why then you'll hear My poor heart call,
To you my love, my life, my all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Thelonious Monk's song "I Surrender Dear" are about the singer's admission of their love and devotion after putting up a front of pride and distance. The singer describes their pride as a "splendid liar" and "sworn enemy of love" that kept them from expressing their true feelings. Now, with their pride cast aside and their heart broken, the singer confesses their love and the pain of being apart from the object of their affection. They acknowledge that the game of staying apart has cost them too much and that they cannot make their way without their beloved. The singer also admits that the games they played, the little mean things they did, were part of the game of wooing but they don't care who is to blame. They end the song by calling out to their love, declaring that they surrender everything to them.

Overall, the song conveys the emotional turmoil and vulnerability of admitting one's love and the pain of being apart from that love. The use of pride as an obstacle is a common trope in love songs, and in this song, Thelonious Monk portrays it as a "splendid liar" that prevents the singer from being honest about their feelings.

Absolutely sensational rendering of this beautiful standard. Must have heard this 50 times and it never grows old. Monk loved melody so much and he sure picked a pretty song to play here. No one played chords like Monk. Notice the run of chords from 2:20-2:32 and from 4:41-5:05. Incredibly exciting and unusual. Of course, after this album, Brilliant Corners, Monk played all solo piano on Thelonious Himself, except for the final track with Trane. And what an album that is!!!

@mariolongo7369

Monk is one of those pianists that you recognize immediately after just a note ...

@1feloniouspunk

this is wonderful!!!

Just an addition to my comment below. How could I have forgotten Wilbur Ware on the Coltrane track? Towards the end of one of the greatest albums ever made of solo piano, Ware starts playing and it is one of the most electric moments I have ever heard in all of jazz.

@noahvale939

You're thinking of another album. Coltrane and Ware are not on this one.
