Round' Midnight
Thelonious Monk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell 'round midnight
'Round midnight
I do pretty well 'til after sundown
Suppertime I'm feeling sad
But it really gets bad 'round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
'Round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And old midnight knows it too

When some quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darling I need you
Lately I find
You're out of my arms
And I'm out of my mind

Let our love take wing some midnight
'Round midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Let our love be safe and sound
When old midnight comes around

Let our love take wing some midnight
'Round midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Let our love be safe and sound
When old midnight comes around

Overall Meaning

Thelonious Monk's song "Round' Midnight" is a melancholic jazz ballad that explores the feeling of heartbreak and reminiscing about a past love affair. The song is a narration of the singer's experience when the clock strikes midnight, which triggers memories of their love. The first stanza sets the tone for the whole song by saying that the singers start feeling down, and it gets worse as it approaches midnight. The singer feels the pain and sadness of being away from their loved one, and memories of the past start to flood in, leading to a sense of loneliness and helplessness.

The second stanza highlights the main theme of the song, which is the memory of the past love affair. The singer is unable to forget their loved one, and these memories keep coming back, making it hard for them to move on. They feel that their heart is still with the loved one, and even midnight knows it too. The following stanza captures the singer's realization of their faults in the relationship and how it might have led to the quarrel. The singer acknowledges that they need their lover back and can't seem to function without them.

In the final stanza, the singer hopes that their lover will return safely and reignite their love. They want their love to be safe and sound when midnight comes around. The whole song reflects the reality of how some emotions can get heightened during specific hours, and memories can come flooding back, leading one down a path of pain and longing.

It begins to tell,
'round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well, till after sundown,
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad;
But it really gets bad,
'round midnight.

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories,
When my heart is still with you,
And ol' midnight knows it, too.
When a quarrel we had needs mending,
Does it mean that our love is ending.

Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart,
And I'm out of my mind.
Let our hearts take wings'
'round midnight, midnight

I saw Monk performing live at Manchester Town Hall in 1964 when I was 16 years old and to this day it is the best concert I have ever attended. Although my musical taste these days tends to be classical and opera nothing can beat the true greats. Parker ,Monk ,Coltrane and Davis.

I too was born in '48 & was fortunate enough to hear Monk, Trane & so many other great artists in SF. Too young to get in the Workshop we did experience the intensity brought forth with memories of speaking to Trane & following Monk up Broadway in his quirky way. Cherished memories.
