Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
Thelonious Monk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They ask me how I knew
My true love was true
I ofcourse reply
Something inside
Cannot be denied

They said some day you'll find
All who love are blind
When your heart's on fire
You must realise
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them
And I gayly laughed
To think they could doubt
To think they could doubt my love

But today
My love has flown away
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes

But today my love has flown away
I am without
I'm without my love

And now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Thelonious Monk's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" are a reflection on love and loss, and the way that even the strongest feelings can be clouded by doubt and sadness. At the beginning of the song, the singer describes his certainty that his love is true: "They ask me how I knew / My true love was true / I of course reply / Something inside / Cannot be denied". Despite the doubts of others ("They said some day you'll find / All who love are blind"), he is convinced that his love is real.

However, as the song progresses and the singer experiences the loss of that love, his perspective changes. He says "But today / My love has flown away / I am without my love". The once-strong singer is now broken and being taunted by friends, who tell him that he was foolish for believing so deeply in his love. The singer acknowledges the truth in their words ("Tears I cannot hide / So I smile and say / When a lovely flame dies / Smoke gets in your eyes"), but it is clear that the experience has left him deeply hurt.

Overall, the song speaks to the fragility of love and the way that even the strongest emotions can be tested by time and circumstance. The idea that "smoke gets in your eyes" serves as a metaphor for the way that love can be obscured by doubt and pain, and how difficult it can be to see clearly in the aftermath of loss.

After Monk left Blue Note he signed with Prestige and recorded a few albums on that label. The trio sides comprise a VERY great album, but Monk did record a wonderful session with a quintet on May 11, 1954. Here he is joined by frank Foster tenor sax, Ray Copeland trumpet Curly Russell bass and Art Blakey drums. Hear how Monk takes apart Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and reassembles it in pure Monk Style. The repeated chord at :25 is just stunning.
