Little Girl
Them Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little girl, little girl
Thought you were on your way to school
Little girl, little girl
Thought you were on your way to school
Do you remember?
You went and broke your teacher's rule

Well, I walked by your classroom
I had to take a look
I stopped a while and watched what you
Had written in your book
'Cause I love ya
And I don't care
A-what they say

Saw you from my window
Standin' by the big oak tree
I sat and thought and wondered, baby
About how it used to be
And miles and miles
Of golden sand
A-walking, a-talkin'
Hand in hand
And I've got you
In my soul
I really do believe
I've got you in my soul

Got you
Got you
Got you
I got you, in my soul
In my, a-in my soul
You're so sweet, angel

I got you, a-in my soul
I love you, I need you
Wild child
Oh child
Whoa, child
Oh-oh, child

Whoa, child
Whoa, child
Ah-ha
Alright!

Alright
Child

Overall Meaning

The Them song "Little Girl" seems like a happy and innocent love song until the listener closely pays attention to the lyrics. The song speaks of a young girl who has disobeyed her teacher's rule and is being reprimanded for it. The singer of the song, who is in love with the little girl, encounters her while walking by her classroom and seems to be cheering her up by reminding her that he loves her irrespective of what anyone else is saying. The song has a palpable innocence to it but the listener can't help but wonder about the nature of the relationship between the girl and the singer, and if it is entirely inappropriate, given the girl's age.

The lyrics put a lot of emphasis on the singer's love for the little girl, which seems to have transcended both space and time. He sings about times when they used to walk and talk, hand in hand, but he is now looking at her longingly from his window, and reminiscing fondly about their time together. The lyrics, "And miles and miles of golden sand, a-walking, a-talking, hand in hand" suggest that the two may have spent a lot of time together, possibly at the beach.

The song was written in 1965 by Van Morrison, the lead singer of Them. It was released as a B-side for the song "Gloria", which became the band's biggest hit. "Little Girl" was eventually included in the album "Them Again". Despite the suggestive nature of the lyrics, the song was a moderate success and was even covered by the likes of The Doors and The New York Dolls.
