Lost My Mind
They Might Be Giants Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lost my mind
Left somewhere behind
Must've been in amongst
The things we'd thrown out

Nowhere to be found
Probably buried underground
I could try to dig it up
But I don't want to waste my time

To summarize, this whole planet is elliptical
In short, I am both the bag and the boxing glove
So I'll apply this wet transfer tattoo showing
A finger pointing at the other one that says I

Lost my mind
Left somewhere behind
I must have put it in amongst
The things we'd thrown out

Nowhere to be found
Probably buried underground
I could try to dig it up
But I don't want to waste my time

Floating down a lazy river is my mind
Circling an unknown baggage carousel is also my mind

Do you ever even think of me?
Though I am always thinking of you
You're the last thing out there now
That somewhere out there

You lost the herd
Separated at birth
Shed around some visages
With intelligent remarks

Lost my mind
Left somewhere behind
I could try to dig it up
But I don't know where
Because I lost my mind

Lost my mind
The one I left behind
Nowhere to be found
Probably buried underground
And I must dig it up

But I don't know how
I died of time

Overall Meaning

The song 'Lost My Mind' by They Might Be Giants is a whimsical and yet profound meditation on the human experience of disconnect and memory loss. It starts by invoking an image of a person who has lost their mind and left it somewhere behind. The lyrics suggest that the mind may have been discarded along with other unwanted things, perhaps thrown out with the garbage, and may be lost forever.

The song then goes on to explore the idea that the mind is an elusive entity that can circle in on itself and become lost. It compares the mind to a circular baggage carousel, unsure of where to stop, and a lazy river, where thoughts and ideas can float by without direction or purpose. The repetition of the chorus "Lost my mind, left somewhere behind" reinforces the theme of dissociation and confusion.

In the second half of the song, the lyrics take a philosophical turn, with the singer musing on the nature of identity and connection. The line "In short, I am both the bag and the boxing glove" suggests a duality between self and other, where we are both victims and aggressors in the push and pull of life. The lyrics then become more personal, addressing a lost love and questioning whether the other person ever thinks of the singer, even as they remain in their thoughts.

Overall, 'Lost My Mind' is a wistful and melancholic song that encapsulates the human experience of losing oneself in thought and memory, while still reaching out for connection and understanding.

After all these years since this song came out, it has one of my favorite lines. "It walks the earth, separated at birth, terrorizing villages with intelligent remarks."

MacStar

@Scarf Guy I like thinking about it from both perspectives, there's so many places where it could be because he has lost it but it seems so time-consuming he couldn't do it, but also it's a very important thing to have your mind, but he can't be bothered to spend the time to do so.

Scarf Guy

It's not that he can't be bothered. He's lost his mind, and there's just so many places it could be that he doesn't have the time to dig a potentially infinite amount of holes looking for it.

Hiushisan

When bands from the 80s continue to make albums and continue to deliver instant classic tracks like this, I think we can have hope for the music industry.

ArrantPrac

I can't help but hear "a goat tried to dig it up" every single time.
