Over time, formed in Davis, United States in 1984, the band retained on singer-songwriter and guitarist Guy Kyser and guitarist Roger Kunkel, with a changing lineup of drummers and bass guitarists. It was noted for its twin guitar attack (compare Television), innovative use of feedback structures and oblique lyrics. The Rough Guide to Rock called Thin White Rope "one of the few worthwhile traditional American guitar rock bands of their era. While most of the essential groups of the time were pushing back the limits of the form, Thin White Rope had the distinction of managing to breathe new life into the genre."
The band contributed a cover of Roky Erickson's Burn the Flames to the 1990 Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye tribute album.
Thin White Rope disbanded in 1992. The double live LP The One That Got Away chronicles its epic last show in Ghent, Belgium, on 28th June of that year.
Waking Up
Thin White Rope Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I feel hot and sad, I feel so unclean
Good things should come from dreaming, come to my second life
The girl I wake with laughing was not the same last night
Try to awaken dreaming, dream like I haven't been
Or be awake and lonely till I sleep again
The lyrics to Thin White Rope's "Waking Up" suggest a sense of disorientation and confusion as the singer struggles to differentiate between their dreams and their reality. The opening lines, "I've been asleep for months, I never had a dream," depict a prolonged state of unconsciousness that is devoid of any sort of imaginative or creative thought process. The singer is unable to recall any dreams they may have had, which may suggest a sense of mental stagnation or numbness.
However, things take a turn when the singer notes that "good things should come from dreaming," prompting them to actively seek a renewed sense of creativity and inspiration. The singer longs for a second life, one in which they can experience the joys and pleasures that come with vivid dreaming. The reference to the laughing girl suggests that the singer may be seeking a sense of connection or companionship in their dreams, as they yearn for the kind of playful, carefree interactions that only exist in the realm of the subconscious.
Overall, the lyrics to "Waking Up" paint a picture of a person who is struggling to cope with the mundanity of their waking life, and who seeks solace in the world of dreams.
