Fountain of all Tears
Thinking Plague Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He closed his eyes
colors seeped through his lids
the random toss of waves
led his body down
waters so bittersweet
the taste of broken hearts
parted his lips
he wept and called out

He opened his eyes
bright stars descended
on the dark banks
shadows formed
of all love
of all love forsaken
all love lost
the tears spilled
and rocked his body

Down down
a river of tears
down towards the fountain
where all tears collide
for all love forsaken
all love lost

the fountain
where all tears collide

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Thinking Plague's song "Fountain of all Tears" narrate the experience of a person who dives into a river of tears and is carried towards the fountain where all tears collide. The first stanza begins with the singer closing his eyes and perceiving colors seeping through his lids, indicating his inner contemplation and introspection. The "random toss of waves" is a metaphor that could be interpreted as the ups and downs of life, and how the singer is passively carried by them. The "waters so bittersweet" could be a reference to the sorrowful state of existence and how even though it is painful, it has some kind of sweetness derived from it. The taste of broken hearts is a sentiment that could imply that the singer is also carrying some kind of heartbreak.

In the second stanza, the singer opens his eyes and the bright stars descend, signifying a spiritual awakening. The "dark banks" and the "shadows formed" could possibly represent the challenges and negative experiences in the singer's life. The repetition of the phrase "of all love" indicates that the singer is contemplating on the meaning of love, and how it is often forsaken and lost. The tears are personified as they spill and rock the singer's body, indicating a cathartic release of emotions.

The refrain of the song is "Down down, a river of tears, down towards the fountain, where all tears collide." The fountain could be seen as a metaphorical symbol for a place where all the emotions reside, where tears that are shed from different experiences and situations come together. It's a place where all love that is forsaken and lost converge. The song can be interpreted as a journey of self-discovery, where the singer confronts their emotions and ultimately faces them by approaching the fountain.

This song is lumbering, but absorbing and moody. The challenging arrangements are delightful.

It's almost like they took the Zep cover of "When The Levee Breaks" and totally overhauled it for modern times. That godlike tectonic drum groove, the earthmoving bass, the spine-tingling vocals, the acerbic rhythm guitar, and the dark lead guitar moaning like a sad, wounded beast, all blend to make one of the most powerful songs in all of rock history. I must have played this song a million times. I remember watching Thinking Plague on a rainy night in some dodgy old building in Salem, MA -- my bassist, who was a music critic for the Boston Phoenix, leans over and says "I think they might be the best band in the world." I replied "I don't think you're wrong. They just might be."
