Bonfire
Third Eye Blind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A little early in spring, a bonfire ring
She's shivering alone
I bumped into you somehow
But you can wear

My duct-taped vest
It's a party best
It's really all I own
Everything's changing now

And I am high like a star that's flying
Cassiopeia
Everything's changing now

She said it's alright
She said no don't die alone
There's no goodbyes

Lightning comes and lightning goes
And it's all the same to me
Let it in
'cause I want you so
I can hardly breathe or release
Into one thousand pieces
I have broke into
Over you
The chain will soon be gone,
I keep burning on and on and on

If nothing else I am myself
That's all I have to give
Everything's changing now

Oh we could live like kings
If we take a risk
Or we could live in doubt
Everything's changing now
Oh now
Come on, come on

And lightning comes and lightning goes
And it's all the same to me
Let it in
'cause I want you so
I can hardly breathe or release
Into one thousand pieces
I have broke into
Over you
The chain will soon be gone,
And I keep burning on and on

This, this is, this is the last time, its the last time
This, this is, this is your goodbye
This, this is, this is the last time
This, this is, this is your goodbye

Some girls will break you down
Just to see you come undone
Everything's changing now

Maybe you and I are cursed
Maybe you and I are one
And that's the universe
Around, around she drags you

Lightning comes and lightning goes
It's all the same to me
Let it in
'cause I want you so
I can hardly breathe or release
Into one thousand pieces
I have broke into
Over you
We'll stop the flames at dawn,
I keep burning on and on and on
I really love you!

Did you get what you wanted?

Did you get what you wanted?
Did you get what you wanted?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Third Eye Blind's song "Bonfire" are marked by a moving sentiment that blends unrequited love and feelings of hopelessness. The song begins with a warm, spring evening and a lonely girl bundled up in a bonfire ring. Out of nowhere, the singer bumps into someone, and when he discovers that the woman is cold, he loans her his duct-taped vest. As they sit together around the bonfire, the conversation turns to the ambiguity of life, with the two trading stories about lightning and the fleeting nature of everything in existence.

Without warning, the singer finds himself overwhelmed with emotions for this woman, a love that fractures him into "one thousand pieces." He bears the weight of an unrequited love, but despite his pain, he finds the strength to persevere, keeping the flames of the bonfire burning long into the night. The song saves a twist for its closing act, with the singer wondering if the two of them are cursed or if they are one in the same with the universe itself. It's a cryptic but fitting way to end a song that trades in the ephemeral nature of everything in life.

I miss how big this band used to be. They're so underrated now. Thing is, Their music IS STILL GREAT. It kills me that this band is not as big anymore.

@chungkingexpress94

They are still big. But they don't want to be and this makes them great. The most recent time i saw 3eb in concert, it was a small venue. When the show started, Stephen asked people to put away their phones and focus on being in the moment. He said that even if you record the whole thing that you can't take the moment with you in life. He encouraged us to look at our fellow concert goers and focus on sharing the moment with them.

@andoreal5384
