Third Eye Blind recorded their first demo in 1993. In 1996, the band landed an opening gig for Oasis, prior to which performance, so the legend goes, Third Eye Blind was warned that the crowd might throw food at them. As it turned out, however, they were invited out for an encore, even after Oasis had already played, bringing Liam Gallagher to tears and sparking the friendly rivalry that would form between the two bands. The band was paid double what they were promised for the gig. Afterwards, the band found themselves in a bidding war among record labels, in which they settled on Elektra because they believed it offered the most artistic freedom. Stephan Jenkins' outspoken behavior after signing the deal earned him the title of "the biggest mouth in music" by many critics. Jenkins has spoken out many times against several different artists, including a heated feud with Rob Thomas of the band Matchbox Twenty.
A fourth album, tentatively titled Ursa Major, was released August 2009. Shortly after the band has slated the release of a follow-up album, Ursa Minor. Only Jenkins' lyrics and vocals are left to be finished; all instrumental work is reportedly complete. Recent live performances have revealed a majority of the new tracks being worked on, including "Don't Believe a Word," "Lay Back (and the Water Will Hold You)," "In the Skin," "Summer Town," "Second Born," "(You Really) Don't Like Me Now" aka "Campfire," "Monotov's Private Opera," "Break Me," "Stevie Ray Vaughan," "Red Star," and "Standing Up For You." Other tracks mentioned for the album by Fredianelli are "Away," "A Sharp Knife," "Captain of Emo," "Swimming," and "Jesse 2k." He also confirmed that "Lay Back" was scrapped. A number of previously unreleased recordings were made available, including "Persephone," "Carnival Barker" (an instrumental), and numerous instrumental sessions declined by Jenkins for inclusion on the fourth album.

I felt it die inside of me
So I turn to you
Life is like that you know
I have your face in a photo in high school when you were alive but that's all I have
And I can't remember who I was myself then and it doesn't help still I look to you as a friend to tell me
Who we are now, who we are
Where does time go now on a wake for young souls
Who we are now, who we are
Who we are now, who we are
Where does time go now on a wake for young souls
Like a lullaby we sing
Well the wind that blows its blowing colder and the child that grows she's growing older
And friends we know they'll turn a shoulder
The friends we know they are growing colder
Who we are now, who we are
Who we are now, who we are
Where does time go now on a wake for young souls
Who we are now, who we are
Who we are now, who we are
Where does time go now on a wake for young souls
Where's my soul
Cycle of the moon brings blood to the women
In the blood of the woman brings birth of a child
Child grow up
Keep forgetting something
Birth of a child comes someplace wild you
Even grey days beat the shade to wean
Unbodied unsouled unheard unseen
Let the gift be grown in the time to call our own
Let the truth be sewn before the window's closing
Truth is natural like a wind that blows
Follow the direction no matter where it goes
So it shall be the earth and the sea
Let the truth blow like a hurricane through me
If I've been cold, if I've spoken in anger, to have been bold, forgive me
You know I don't see your mother, not like before, though she hasn't forgotten she doesn't like to be reminded anymore.
Annie got married it didn't come with out tears like the day you died I have laughter for these years
Who we are now, who we are
Who we are now, who we are
Where does time go now on a wake for young souls
Who we are now, who we are
Who we are now, who we are
Where does time go now on a wake for young souls
All the things we know are going to fall away from me like a grain of sand slips through a good friends hand
The lyrics of Wake for Young Souls by Third Eye Blind are highly poetic, touching upon themes of grief, loss, and the passage of time. The song begins with the singer discovering something fundamental about his own identity - his soul - and then feeling it die inside him. This revelation leads him to seek comfort in a friend, someone he has a shared history with that he can call upon to help him understand who they are now. The refrain of "Who we are now, who we are" reinforces the theme of identity and the idea that we are constantly changing and evolving.
The chorus of the song becomes an elegy for young souls, those that have passed away too soon. The singer questions where time goes as he mourns those who have left too soon. The second verse touches on the transience of life and the way in which even those we know and love can grow distant and disconnected from us over time. As the song progresses, it becomes more and more abstract, invoking images of the cycles of the moon, a child's birth, and truth blowing like a hurricane.
Overall, the lyrics of Wake for Young Souls are complex and layered, touching on themes that are universal and relatable. The song is a deeply moving tribute to those who have left us and a reminder to cherish the time that we have with those we love.
